No PIN # is safer now than using a PIN #?

Almost everywhere cards are accepted, you can just hit enter without the pin# and the transaction is processed. I guess you only need a PIN# now for the ATM.
I realize the thought is so hackers can't steal the PIN#, but how does this make sense?

Because as a debit transaction, a pin is required. No Pin on a debit card makes VISA responsible.

It’s gotten to the point that when I do go to an ATM I momentarily freeze up because my PIN # doesn’t come to me and/or I second guess it. Used to never happen when we used them all the time.

When you bypass the PIN it processes as a credit charge I believe.

Some places don't charge a fee for debit cards while still charging a fee for credit.
The cashback options have run it's course these days.

I set up my CC in Apple Pay and I rarely even take my wallet out anymore.

Some people can't do this consistently and lose track of how much money they have to pay off credit balances. Using a debit card, which when used as debit with a PIN, literally won't work if you try to spend money you don't have.
While in a perfect world everybody has impulse control and maturity to not buy things they can't afford at that moment in cash, it's just not reality. Debit cards offer a hard "no" when you try.

I have 5 credit cards:
Amazon VISA for Amazon
Costco VISA for CostCo (kids, we buy in bulk)
Amex Platinum which I use for work travel and they pay the fee
Amex Blue Cash Preferred with no annual fee for 5% back on gas and non-costco groceries
Southwest VISA for Southwest travel (and sometimes kids' tuition to maintain my status

Cash to tip the valet, cash to tip the bellhop, cash to tip the captain and mate, cash to tip the tour guide, cash to tip the bicycle taxi etc. Cash is still relevant. And you need an ATM card with a PIN to do that.

in other parts of the world, a pin is required for POS CC transactions (as an extra security measure).

I use Samsung pay wherever possible. Just put your debit card info in your phone. Swipe at checkout. Your card number is never sent to the payment terminal (they use some sort of token instead) so it would be impossible for a rogue employee to steal it. Also, your card info is much safer stored on your phone than it is in a physical wallet.

I use tap to pay or Apple Pay for pretty much everything, no pin needed. Even my atm has that option…but for that I still have to use my pin.

I had to write a check yesterday and used a pen to do it. Pencil can be erased.
