Talking about the fact that apple and adidas basically are putting up performance bonuses for him based on his draw to the game.

I for one think its cool and mechanism MLS should pounce on for growing the league faster. I just don't follow MLS, so not sure if this has been done before.

I know Beckham was given rights to a team on his deal though.

This is almost like the NIL stuff in NCAA, but on a massive scale.

All MLS clubs are pitching in financially to bring in Messi.

Adidas was heavily involved in Beckham's move too.

You don't think Messi will be a big draw for MLS and help elevate the league's status?

No

MLS as it’s structured doesn’t allow it

The owners are doing this to fill the stadiums for two years for extra cash that they won’t put back into the team

They won’t even vote to expand squad sizes or raise the salary cap

Is MLS even structured to bring in European players that have expiring contracts?

Yes. Transfers do happen between MLS and euro clubs. It just doesn’t happen frequently.

In the franchise yes

Especially since there isn’t a penalty for being shitty

Most clubs in world soccer basically strive to break even

Well yea bc the player can sign for who ever

But you don’t see MLS actually buying a ton of players from Europe

Most of them come on free contracts

Yeah, unlike that league full of parity that he just played in.

Parity breeds mediocrity especially in a league that doesn’t punish being shite and not putting out a competitive side

At least LAFC doesn’t buy into that bullshite

They are dead set on being the super club

How'd these moves work out long term for the NASL?

It's worked well for MLS though. Beckham 100% helped with exposure and interest.

Again, in a very immediate short term sense. Nobody today gives a single frick that Beckham trotted out a for the Galaxy for a few half assed efforts to close out his career in 2007.

If anything it delegitimizes the league as place where players come to collect a big check once they are done at the highest level, which Messi admitted to in his comments the other day.

The league without a salary cap? yeah, it served as a warning to MLS and I think what happened to NASL has been good for the early stability of MLS but most here would argue it’s time for the Don to take the shackles off and let teams spend. NASL also had its heyday in the 70s when people cared way less about soccer and there was less access to soccer media, and additionally most Americans had never seen or probably heard of the World Cup. Imo it’s basically an apples to oranges comparison.

There’s a book written about the Beckham effect
You’re minimizing what he did in a massive way. Ignoring the ~100 apps and 20 goals, his move ushered in a new era in MLS in which teams could really start spending to bring in big name players. The quality of the league has increased significantly over that time.

Yeah, because people who say stuff like this totally respected the league before this move

This isn’t the Saudi league or Chinese league where there will be zero follow up interest. Messi to MLS is a massive coup that will increase interest in the league at home and abroad. Miami is already top 5 in US sports for Instagram followers.
