Season 2 was not good. It’s incredible how they decided to give Mason, the main character, the worst ending. They also had several episodes where he didn’t make a first appearance until they were 10 minutes into the episode. It was like they were purposely trying to not include him in the story or main plot line.

I have not. It was just so perfectly modern Hollywood stupidity that I figured it had to be parody.

Della was the real brains behind the operation. Perry was a central character but he didn’t really drive the story like the TV show

Loved the first season but had a hard time getting into season 2. Started really slow, kept waiting for something to happen and finally gave up.

its a good description of the Characters

Yep. The black guy is in fact a black guy. Very accurate description.

This was one of the better written and acted HBO shows in a while, regardless of it having a black actor and a lesbian character in it.

It was a good show. And any diversity with the cast wasn’t force fed. But I’m not shocked you’re this hyper critical when you never watched it.

S1 was so good but S2 dropped the ball.

I am. It wasn’t. It was incorporated well into the writing and the storylines. It fit the period reflected.

It’s a good example of how something well written can incorporate those things without banging people over the head with it.

exactly my feeling as well

Really? It was there for sure in S1, but it wasn't so obnoxious to make me stop watching it. It was enough though along with the same feeling you expressed above to sap my interest in S2

In two seasons, out of the probably top 20 main characters, two of them were black. Drake and... his wife. THE HORROR!

Exactly.

Della wasn't a lesbian Mary Sue. She made her share of mistakes and (in spite of her being the person that seemed to be the most "in the know") turned out to be the most naïve character of all.

Paul operated 100% as a black man of his time. There was never a "no way a black man could get away with that back then" moment. And again, he wasn't some omniscient black savior. He made his share of mistakes and took his lumps.

Burger had a small but important role, and once again he was neither a gay champion or a martyr. It was just a good insight into how gay people made their way in that world.

We'd be lucky if every attempt at "wokeness" resulted in this good of a show. The entire series was a lesson in how to present minorities in a responsible and entertaining way that never felt preachy or demeaning.

And in no way was the Perry Mason character an afterthought. Great performance in a great role.

THE HORROR!

Your words, not mine. Never said that it induced horror. Never even suggested anything like that.

There were about 10 or so main characters in a legal drama set in 1930's LA. The brains of the operation (and really the main protagonist) was a closeted lesbian who basically saved Perry's arse throughout the show. Her romantic interest was a wealthy free-spirited lesbian who taught her life lessons. The private investigator was proud black man with a loving wife and close supportive family. The receptionist was an insightful Asian woman. The main prosecutor was also closeted. Perry was a mess and was basically propped up by those around him. The alleged bad guys were the selfless downtrodden immigrants, while the real bad guys (including the overzealous law and order prosecutor) were mostly all middle-aged white guys ... and one middle-age white rich lady.

If it makes you feel better or more worldly to pretend that this was not really an intentional effort to tinker with a well-established and beloved story (and really tear down its conventions) then go ahead. But denying the obvious really destroys your credibility with anyone who is being objective.

Also, I watched the show in spite of the above and would probably have watched season 3, especially if the story was compelling

Practically every commercial today has an interracial couple. Hopefully we can all agree that this is WAYYYYY over-represented compared to real life. These commercials present interracial couples in a "responsible and entertaining way that never felt preachy or demeaning". But isn't it fair to ask why it is suddenly being done constantly when it is so far from reality? Same thing for this show...it was set up this way intentionally, and its absurd to deny it

In the season long thread after the finale, my main complaint was Bella was basically perfect the entire season. Like you say, she was the brains of the operation, and her perfection was too much. But it wasn't that way for both seasons. That's one of the reasons I liked season one better.

So your saying a Perry Mason show had some cliché stuff in it? Yes because each episode of the original was incredibly unpredictable. Just because it has some predictable story lines doesn't mean they weren't done well. Drake was a good character and a black guy having a loving wife doesn't bother me. Regardless if that's supposed to be some played out storyline.

Who had a whopping 3 minutes of screen time. But she even figured stuff out over Perry which was frustrating.

Alleged? One of them was the bad guy and convicted as such.

It's a modern Perry Mason, the story had to be tinkered with. Especially since the first season was a prequel. Who in the world wants to watch a spot on remake of the original? I had complaints as well, but it was a good story (the first season being better than the second), with interesting characters (some cliché), and good acting. He wasn't going to be the Perry Mason most people knew until the 3rd season anyway. He was an P.I. in S1, inexperienced in S2, and I expected him to become more polished and reflect an OG Perry starting in S3.

I can think of a number of marketing and P.R. reasons for them to do this (as can anyone), but the most obvious reason is that there are still people complaining about interracial marriages on social media and movie message boards.

I noticed the diversity but didn’t think it was over the top

Della was sexy AF and a good complimentary character counterbalancing Perry’s personal issues

I agree S2 was not good. Surprising choice of storyline which was all over the place
