This was a staple in my household growing up back in the 60’s. Remember a segment called something like “this happened to me” that told about someone usually having a near death encounter with some wild animal.
Guess this magazine is long gone, kinda like Street and Smith as well as The Sporting News.

8-20yr ol boy was obsessed with hunting.
I would get outdoor life, field and stream, North America whitetail, Petersons hunting.
I would read them front to back as it was the only way pre internet to get any info into how the “real hunters killed big bucks”
Now I just watch YouTube and listen to podcasts.

Deer & Deer Hunting was originally a group of hunters that called themselves
Stump Sitters. They would observe deer, etc. and keep notes.

Great memories. Dad had subscriptions to the major publications and as a kid I was ate up with anything outdoors and I couldn’t get enough of them. Also in Field and Stream I think ( maybe not it’s been a few years) was a favorite column of mine Tap’s Tips. Always great suggestions for fishing and hunting.

I remember that segment. It taught me a lot. Also Jack O’Connor.
And I remember Taps Tips. Those were great days, waiting for your monthly outdoor magazines to come in. Sharing them with your buddies. No one had a phone or IPad.

I always loved reading Jack O' Connor so it should be no surprise that when I bought my first big game rifle it was Winchester M70 chambered in 270 Win. Now almost 50 years later it's STILL a good big game cartridge.

I remember one issue where a hunter was attacked by almost a dozen bobcats that jumped out of a tree he was hunting under and attacked him. I really doubt it happened, but don't let the facts get in the way of a good story

My high school library got Outdoor Life and Field & Stream. I was one of the few students who read anything voluntarily, so the librarian gave them (along with a couple of motorcycle magazines) to me as soon as they arrived.
Read them cover to cover, even the stories about fly fishing for trout and sheep hunting in the mountains, which were far removed from my quests for cat squirrels and farm pond bream.
