That's easy to answer. It actually creates and sustains more interest through the season to have divisions. Think about when bottom feeders like the NFC South are all still "in it" in week 16 because they are all 6-10.
Also, the NFL plays 17 regular season games against each other, vs 8 (or 9) in the SEC.

I don’t mind it. Year three under Kelly and our defense should be crazy good. Oline will be solid with all the experience with and upgrade at runningback. No drop off with wide receiver corps as whole and Nuss having a seamless transition.

Alabama’s already released:

@ Miss St
South Carolina
@ Ole Miss
Kentucky
@ Vandy
Mizzou
@ Auburn

They have a 17 game season and a 12 team playoff format. The SEC could manage with divisions if they played 17 games and had a conference playoff with 12 teams.

I think it should be like the English Premier League and the bottom 4 teams get relegated to a lower conference like the Big 12 or the ACC. Then the top 4 in the Big 10 or whatever it ends up, come to the SEC for the next season.

This is true for an eight game schedule, but not a nine game schedule. With 9 games and 3 permanents, 4 divisions can rotate just as fast as a single division. The difference is you are limited to 4 sets of permanent opponents.
Yes, they could go to 4 divisions, but there is no provision that would allow them to have a 4 team playoff to decide the conference champion.

Why would they? Because the folks that run the SEC are basic short-sighted idiots? SEC screwed the SEC. If I’m head of ESPN, why would I pay more than contractually obligated to? Contract isn’t even that old. One would think there’d be an extenuating circumstances clause in there or something, but I ain’t no damn lawyer.
Because a ninth SEC game is more valuable as a broadcast than LSU hosting Our Lady of Holy Cross College.

So? You don't have to have a 4 team playoff just like you don't have to have a CG in a single division.
The only real difference is the single division is a true cream rises to the top model with only one winner. With the 4 division model there are at least 4 winners of something and that has value in a system that has so little parity.
Anyway, my point wasn't to argue for one over the other, but to suggest you shouldn't self constrain your thinking.

You make good points, but I was taking it as a given that the conference would continue to have a CG. I have seen no suggestion otherwise and the conference isn’t likely to give up the revenue. They could still have a CG with 4 divisions, but in that situation the divisions are really only artifices for scheduling purposes. They have no actual meaning from a conference standings perspective. It would effectively be the same as a single division.

So Bama gets another bridge schedule to dodge top teams. LSU will have to play AU UGA UF Tenn I hate those cheating bastards. And please come at me Bama fans. How many times you’ve played UGA regular season since Mizzou and A&M joined?? Then look how many times LSU has had to play them.

Maybe I’m dumb , but why does it have to be either 1&7 or 3&6. Why can’t it be 2 permanent opponents?

The goal is to play every team at least once every 2 years. You accomplish that with either 1&7 or 3&6.

No reason not to have an east and west. Let MS/AL state line be the demarcation.
We play UT, OU, TAM, Ark, OM, MSt and Mizzou every year. Then play two from the east rotating every year.
With more teams comes less games to play the teams already around. Give us AL/Van, UGA/SoCar, Fla/UL and Ten/AU.
Yeah it will suck not to play AL/Fla every year but it's the only way to make it fair. I still think we got the shaft with Florida being our permanent east opponent.
Gotta rotate to keep it real.
shite, in five years we will cut Vandy and Mizzou to bring in Clemson and Fla. St. anyway. Ultimately the almighty dollar will decide.

So you want LSU essentially exiled from the SEC to some SWC/Big 12 hybrid division? I would hate that setup. People are complaining now about the proposals not allowing LSU to play Alabama, Florida and Auburn every year. What would it be like to only play those teams once every 4 years?
Posted on 6/2/23 at 12:49 am to MikeTheTiger71
This is amusing because apparently the schools are having the same fights, as they as of yet have been unable to agree upon the proper format for a 9-game conference schedule, hence this one-year 8 game format.

It would be incredible to go through that schedule with no losses. Let's rock and roll!
