Natural lay downs beat man made brush piles 13 months out of the year.

I do be sniping though… I just screen grabbed that because it was badass looking. I got that “old” lowrance dialed in.

It’s down scan, not sonar.

It does side scan, but the dirty secret is that down scan in side scan view options is a game changer vs. sonar.

There is a lot that goes into it as far a frequency, fish reveal confidence percentage, contrast, color pallets for down scan and fish reveal, etc.

I’d have to look at it to give you all the exact settings, but it changes with depth and water quality. The key is knowing how to adjust on the fly as conditions change. Playing with it is almost as fun as catching fish… Almost.

Nice Crappie catch! I'm sure your son enjoyed it.

He did. His little arse was chilling under a golf umbrella by 11 am. It took daddy to put enough fish in the box to make a mess. We ended up with 22 between 7 am and 11:30 am including run time between 5 spots.

I wouldn't have known that first Pic wasn't forward sonar if you hadn't said it wasn't. That's crazy clear imaging

Well, speed is the arguably most important thing. 2-4 mph is how you want to be moving. It just so happens my boat goes 3.1 mph when clicked into forward with no throttle.

Without live scope, you have to idle over and look at it (If no fish, go to your next spot), turn up wind to it once you pass it, drop the Ultrex and pull up on it watching your graph. Spot lock once you see it. It’s under the motor. Let the wind get the boat facing it, then jog back 10 feet. You now have essentially a 20’ floating dock that shrouds the top.

At one point my son and I are on the back fishing both sides of the motor. Ultrex just doing it’s thing. Retying hooks, etc…. Game changer.

Once your locked, the graph just streaks the structure and it looks more like the left side of the screenshot above. But you can see the graph cloud and clear which corresponds with fish movement and the bites coincide. They don't just stay on the pile. It's an ambush spot and they'll leave to chase bait if a ball passes, but they come back within 5-10 minutes typically.

Hey, I have that button on mine!

I've been working at it. I've been using regular sonar and medium chirp mostly. Such a big AH HA moment the first time you find your bait on there.

I can't make my down scan look like that no matter what I do

Second that. I’ve read and tried million different settings. I would love to get efficient with my downscan and sidescan

Down is still sonar.

What are your go to rules for adjusting settings?

For example... water depth increases, whats you next adjustment? Water clarity changes, what's you next adjustment? Do you switch color pallets often. I normally keep that consistent.

I have humminbird units, so its a little different but I would imagine it's the same concept. Livescope is getting installed now. Picking it up tomorrow to hopefully smash the perch this weekend.

The clarity is a dead give away that it's not forward facing imo

I guess, technically. What I mean is I exclusively use down structure scan vs. your typical sonar that looks more like this.

Sonar on left down scan on right...

The deeper the water, the lower the frequency.

The clearer the water the greater the increase in sensitivity. Murky water will cloud the graph with greater sensitivity as it picks up the particles in the water.

I'm a red/orange structure scan and green fish reveal kind of guy. I just like that combo. I find it gives good detail in red/orange and I personally like "fish" to be green. Fish reveal confidence I try to keep around 70%. I think it was on 68% for this particular image. While it doesn't light up everything that is obviously a fish, you have greater confidence if it's green then it is most likely a fish. This helps me big time when worm fishing deep humps for bass in the summer.

In this picture, because of the fish reveal settings, what you are looking at is a top full of bluegill, but only the bigger white perch are lighting up green on the outside edges of the top and down the stump to the right.

I just got the ultrex this year. I'd love to get a live scope, but it ain't in the budget this year.
