Will the astronomical rise in homeowners/flood insurance empty out the Southshore?

These insurance raises are starting to get into seriously expensive territory:

I believe it will. I have several family members in the Houma Thibodaux area raising hell. Flood and home owners doubling. Costing upwards of $1000 a month to live in a home that paid off.

this should go over well

My homeowners went down $200/year. Shocking after Ian made landfall here.

In our neighborhood in St. Bernard, the real estate market for houses between $250K and $350K has completely frozen since the start of the year.

Last year builders were throwing up spec houses at 180 / sqft and getting multiple offers during construction. Now, we have a number of new builds ready to go that have sat for months. Prices have barely moved down... maybe $5-$10K.

One of the guys that works for me will be paying more per month for his escrow than he does for his mortgage premium as of June 1. I don’t see how this is sustainable.

Federal government never should have been subsidizing insurance to begin with... wouldn't have these issues coming to a head like this

The last 3 years all (HO, PT, FI) have gone up. That hasn't happened before that time period. Last year there was a vote to raise property tax to give the police a raise.. I know a lot of people who wouldn't have voted for that if they knew the high+ jump in the insurances. I am just praying we don't have a busy season for a couple of years so HO can go down...

Dont look now, but the continuing rise in car insurance too. Basically, it's going to cost too much to live in Louisiana on the lower ages.

If it’s not the lack of economic opportunity and crime it’s the cost of living. Such a sad thing to sit by and watch honestly.

I hate seeing Louisiana go down and down and down. I love the state and like many others wish we didn’t have to leave it. The reality is, it’s just got so many factors working against it. No matter how much you love Louisiana it’s real hard to justify.
