Both nights it's bc the leadoff guy was a lefty and Jay likes having someone else get the leadoff out. It's less pressure on our bullpen guys to come in with the leadoff man already out. It just so happens that Cooper got screwed by an Ump and the shift each time.
Also Coop can pitch basically every day with no drop off so it doesn't hurt to use him for it. That's why they aren't doing this with Herring
