Was looking into transportation around the islands for my upcoming trip and a quick google search implies that I will need my IDP to even rent an ATV on the islands . Don’t have a AAA nearby to just pop in and get one but willing to drive to BR or wherever an office is if need be. Is it really something they’re gonna check for before renting me something ? Thanks in advance.

I rented a car in Santorini. They never checked. From what I read online prior to my trip, majority of rental companies never ask for it with any rentals.

I was just in greece and I don't believe they asked. Or if they did ask I just showed them my driver's license

Technically yes I think but I have heard most places don’t check.

I got mine online, you don’t need to go to AAA. It took 5 minutes and arrived in like a week.

FWIW, I was in Corfu 1.5 years ago and they definitely checked when I rented a car. Guess it depends on the vendor.

I’ve seen some pretty bad reviews online about that e-ita company you linked that their stuff isn’t legit. Did you ever have to show it to anyone ?

We’re renting a car in Naxos. I’ve read that you’re required to have IDP for rental, but I’ve also read no one checks it. I went to AAA and got one just to be safe. For $20 and 30 mins of my time, the peace of mind was worth it

This seems like the only legitimate route for this from what I’ve read. Surely don’t wanna make the 2 hour drive to Shreveport or Baton Rouge to do it but may just for the peace of mind. I may just go with the sketchy version that FunBunch linked earlier. Lol

I mean I’ll prob just be renting an atv or side by side. Better safe than sorry I guess.

I've seen some people say its fake and a lot of others say it worked fine for them so they didn't care.

They are probably right that its not legit but an ID showed up at my house in a week so whatever

I may go that route just to have SOMETHING ya know ? 2 hour drive to go to a AAA sounds awful .I’d do AAA by mail but I think I’ve waited too late for that.

From what i'm told most rental car agencies don't ask for it. The real question is if you have an issue, and end up needing it talking to a local policeman. I was at my local AAA office picking up an IDP this past week and overheard a guy talking about nearly going to jail last year due similar situation. police asked for it, he didn't have it. he had to talk down the police who were planning on taking him to jail. and btw i confirmed IDP is required in greece.

For 20 bucks, just go get it.

If its easy get one do it, if not I wouldn't worry.

An IDP is nothing but a scam from AAA basically. They only last 1 year...ridiculous. It would be incredibly easy to date it the same expiration as your DL. Its literally just a translation of your DL to multiple languages. Anyone official that speaks/ reads English will want your real DL as that's official. IDP is just so they can get your information in their local language. If the police were pissed about it they either didn't speak or read English which is possible or were just being jackasses.

The closest AAA office is an hour away from me so I've not used one for 3 of 4 trips and never needed it.

It looks like you still can't get it online....which makes no sense. Its not official...if the information matches your DL which would be the only thing used if you ever got into REAL trouble, then I don't see why it matters and they couldn't just do it online.

Yeah I’m kinda torn on this. I called Shreveport and Baton Rouge AAA today (both two hours away from me ) and only the Baton Rouge office of those 2 actually do them. Really not sure if it’s worth the 2 hour drive when I have no other business in BR between now and the trip. I’m pushing 40 and am not gonna be drinking n driving nor driving like a jackass. Worst case scenario I could Uber or taxi around but I highly doubt I’ll have any issues getting a side by side or atv rental with my regular DL.

You can do it through AAA by mail. Look on their website.

they forced me to get one in Spain

What a stupid scam. Pay $50, get a piece of paper that means nothing. Wow so much better for everybody involved.
