For the Gen Xers here, MTV was a staple of our diet. It was always on in the background. Like many great institutions, it drifted from what originally made it great. Reality TV shows started there with the Real World and MTV slowly shifted from anything to do with music.

MTV news w/ Kurt Loder was as close to the news as teenagers got. It's finally over.

MTV News to Shutdown

Side note-

If someone was to hit play on May 9, 1983's MTV programming and just stream commercials and all from 40 years ago, people would watch. 24 hrs a day, just from 40 years ago. I'd totally have that on in the background.

Yesterday Sum 41 announced their break up and now this!

What's next? Sugar Ray is going to change their name to Sugar Gay?

Looks like they’ll have to learn to install microwave ovens and make custom kitchen deliveries

It happened prior to internet streaming.

But I do contend that folks would watch the 40 year old programming of OG MTV today. With vintage commercials.

MTV changed music forever with the idea of the music video. I’m just gonna say ONE name. Micheal Jackson. Would he have ended up as popular as he came to be without the music videos.

Michael was already popular when MTV started. They just helped him become the King of Pop and arguably the greatest entertainer in history.
