Liquid cooled. Cummins or Kohler. Buy a little bit bigger than you need. I.E. if you want to run the unit to power your entire home and a 25kw will run your house at 100%, get a 30kw that won't have to strain as hard.

if youre in the county, i recommend getting a 1000 gal prop tank instead of natural gas.

I have a 30kw Cummins and we just ordered a 25kw for my mom's house. Install prices can fluctuate significantly though.

Electric Generators Direct

I have purchased two from them for different houses. Both 22KW. Runs 3700 sq ft house with 3 A/Cs and pool. All bulbs in house are LED.

Shows up on a truck with liftgate and pallet jack so, if needed, you can put it out of the way until you are ready to move into position. Have a few friends help you put it where you want and get a electrician and plumber to hook up. I suggest if you are using NG you call the gas co and get a larger gas meter, especially for distance. Mine is in corner of backyard 100 ft from house.

My neighbor just had a whole house Generac installed and overheard someone as him how much it cost and his reply was simply "Too damn much" but he does have peace of mind if he loses power------as long as he doesn't lose NG service that is.

Got a 24kW Generac, was $6299 + tax, purchased locally. My install was less than $2000 but all my utilities were already within 10’ of the spot for the generator. Generator price included transfer switch.

Cummins liquid cooled if you can get it

If not, go with Cummins air cooled nat gas.

The less expensive Generac’s that most folks buy are air-cooled, higher rpm motors that are quite loud. The more expensive Cummins are typically water cooled, lower-rpm (hence quieter) 4-cylinder auto engines. You get what you pay for.

Why?

Because the gas company didn't figure in supplying 300 generators as well as all the houses so you don't get the pressure you need to run the generator.

My power hardly ever goes out so I just can’t justify the cost of a whole house generator plus install. In 2020, I paid an electrician to install an interlock kit and portable generator receptacle to my main panel outside. For the few times a decade I have an extended power outage, that works just fine. I have an 8,000/10,000 portable Generac that I plug into it and am able to run two or three window units, all lights, and my fridge. The house stays very comfortable while none of my food spoils. Turn off the window units and fridge circuits then turn on the water heater circuit for an hour and bam, enough hot water for everyone to take a quick shower. When we’re done showering, the water heater circuit gets shut off then the window units and fridge go back on.

Sure, it still requires a little work and elementary math to calculate what can be run and what can’t be but for the one or two times every ten years that we have a hurricane strong enough to knock out power, it is more than enough. Not spending $10,000 or more when I can do just fine for a week or two having spent a total of $2,000 or less on a big portable generator and the interlock kit. Just my opinion.

guess it depends on how self-sufficient you want to be. i personally dont trust the gas service to always be there for me, especially given whats going on at the federal level lately.

Bought at Gautreaux’s Outdoor Power 6 months ago. Price is still the same today, next order price going up to $6500+. Used a local electrician for the install.

I agree with this but over the last 25 yrs I’ve lived in this house I’ve been using a portable gas generator and back feeding my power after hurricanes. I’ve only had to do it 3 times in 25 yrs and never more than a week.

My 24kW Generac is a large portable with no wheels. But it’ll get me through a storm. I don’t need to live in a lap of luxury for the week post hurricane I just want to be comfy and not lose all my shite in the freezer. More importantly keep the wife comfy. $9000 felt ok, $25K didn’t for something I’ll use every 7-10 yrs.
