I think if you’re in a position to make the playoffs you put him on the roster for pinch hit opportunities, pinch run opportunities and the occasional defensive replacement. He’s a team guy all the way (just look at his patience to take walks this year and set up Tanks)… you WANT him in that clubhouse come October.

Yea...I mean if whoever drafts Crews is happy with their CF in this season then they aren't going to take a chance on bringing him up I wouldn't think. Now if that CF is just a decent glove that can't hit I'd say they might make a move on him.

Crews could play any OF position, so if you have a weak spot anywhere, he could see playing time earlier than most draftees. He'll get some minor league work and then transition to the bigs. I don't see it being a very long stint in the minors unless he struggles and even then, I think people have seen enough to take the chance to just have him on the roster as a solid OF back up.

Exactly. Watching the series this weekend, I was thinking scouts already know what he is, they’re done scouting him. At this point they’re seeing what Tanks does with the RBI opportunities when Crews gets on ha.

I think they would rather him in the minors getting 4-5 ABs/game instead of pinch hitting once a game or every other game in the bigs.

He’ll get that immediately in the minors and make a quick transition.

Is there any precedent at all for drafting a player in MLB and having that player make the show that same season that was in progress when the draft took place?

Happens every once in a while, but it's usually pitchers.

Garrett Crochet in 2020.
Brandon Finnegan & Carlos Rodon in 2014.

The Pirates' owner is one of the least respected owners in MLB; a super tightwad. McDonald said over the weekend broadcast that Crews is represented by Scott Boras. Didn't know a player can have an agent at this point, so probably just unofficially for now. But Boras is famous for playing hardball in his demands......and his clients get some of the biggest contracts...so not sure how negotiations will go with that owner.

Boras is a notorious pit bull and will definitely make them pay up.

Have a good friend that is a scout for the Pirates out in California. He told me 2 months ago it's a coin flip between Skenes and Crews...said every scout in the MBL attends all the SEC games.

Crews is greatness but you can never have too much pitching and without pitching you have nothing. So for me the Pirates should load up on pitching. But it's a good problem. Crews or Skeens.

Pirates are going to be very fun to watch over the next decade and are already off to a nice start this year. LSU fans looking for a team should follow them instead of the cheating Astros.

if I know the Pirates they're looking at investments and operate as a major league farm system, develop a young talent at a reasonable price and sell them off to the highest bidder

The Pirates have a strong farm currently — no real big time OF prospects, however

They also have a young budding star at SS that is out several months with injury

To the poster that made the comparison to the Rays, the pirates manager came from the Rays where he was the hitting coach
