I don’t know. Tigers “Expect anything different?” putt in the US Open was probably a bigger shot. That was some of the most fun I’ve ever had watching golf.

Not even close to the most famous in golf history. 4 easy and quick ones:

Sarazen’s double Eagle
Nicklaus’ 1 iron
Hogan’s 1 iron (actually a 2 iron supposedly)
Watsons Pebble chip in

I guess I think of Tiger and Jack as bigger than any one shot.

Certainly the chip in at 16 was incredible, but lapping the field at Pebble was shot after shot after shot.

That's a strong list Zippy.

The Tiger shot that impressed me the most was at a tournament that ran late and it was getting really dark.

Tiger hit his drive on the wrong fairway and he couldn't see the green because of the darkness.

He lifted a 6 iron up over the trees and put it on the middle of the green to win the tournament.

I want to say it was the Honda Classic but I'm not sure.

It was a ridiculously good shot.

I recall that one too. Very nice. There were Hogan and Arnie shots at the British Open that were legendary shots as well. I think each of them have a plaque at the spot.

Are you thinking of the shot at Firestone?

Great shot. Imo, the greatest shot I’ve ever seen was Phil’s 2nd shot on 13 at the 2010 masters.

It would have been if he'd made the putt.

I was at the 2005 Masters and we followed Tiger & DeMarco the entire day. Standing on 15 tee box, I looked at my buddy and suggested we go to #18 tee due to the way the round was shaping up.

20 minutes later I heard the roar and had to ask a CBS cameraman what happened.

Worst decision of my life.

I'm surprised there's been no mention of Justin Leonard's 45 foot putt on #17 to help the USA defeat the Euros in the 1999 Ryder Cup.

That’s because the thread is asking about
quote:

the most famous shot in golf history?

People that don’t follow golf have no idea about most of the shots mentioned in this thread.

The most famous shot ever is going to be something by Tiger just because he is one of the most famous people on earth. I really don’t know why that’s so hard to understand.

You could walk up to 1000 random people on the street and maybe 50 would know anything about that shot.

Don’t kid yourself, most people wouldn’t know eldrick’s lucky roll in shot either.

If I had to pick one “most famous” it would be Hogan’s one iron at the 1950 US OPEN at Marion and there is no argument. 1st tournament and major tournament after being crushed in the bus accident, 1 iron (actually 2 iron) on a second shot to force a playoff for the US Open which he then won the next day in playoff. He could barely walk. The photograph of the shot immortalized the shot world wideso probably 75% of the US saw the photo and knew the story about Hogan. Miraculous.

What does that matter.

In Masters lore, it is a very famous shot, actually its a one in a billion shot considering the equipment of that time and a small short hitting guy.

Bobby Jones and Ben Hogan are the only golfers to have been given ticker-tape parades in New York. And Bobby had TWO of them in 1921 and 1930.

Tiger is more famous, but back in the day of radio and newspapers, there were still famous golfers.

Follow the Sun was a movie about Hogan starring Glenn Ford.

Tiger elevated golf by dominating. He raised the purses and increased the depth of the fields.

But the greats of the game did their part in all eras. Back to Ted Ray, Harry Vardon, Ouimet, Hagen, Sarazen, Nelson, Hogan, Palmer, Nicklaus and on and on.

Not a fan of him but I always remember Bubba’s massive hook out the woods in his playoff.
