Haven’t bought a mattress in over 10 years and desperately need a new one. Need a king mattress on the firm side maybe with a foam top??
I’m in BR so any recs would be appreciated

Get the best you can afford. Picking a mattress that works for you is only something you can do. I have a sleep number bed and it's the best I've ever had (though very expensive).

We bought ours at a Lazy Boy furniture gallery in Boise. I don't recall the brand, it's not Lazy Boy, but it is the most comfortable mattress I've ever slept on.

King Casper.
Just as good as the expensive ones for $2k.

I’m looking also.
This one lasted me 7 years.
No matter how much you rotate it the mattress is done.
Looking at hybrids.

Wholesale Mattress and Factory on Florida. They'll make you one better than the big box stores for cheaper.

Big Fig for the win! Ignore all the fatties in the pictures or enjoy a laugh. If you want a firm mattress that won’t wear out or sag this one is great. I’m not a fattie (not that there’s anything wrong with that!), just to be clear, but needed a very firm mattress for my back. I’ve tried several others including memory foam (these are the worst imo) and I figured if it could handle the land whales then I would give it a try. I did end up adding a foam topper because it really was super firm. Had it for 5 years and really happy with my purchase.

In Baton Rouge this is the only answer. Anything else is from people who don’t know what they are talking about. The guy literally makes the mattresses that they sell in some of the local stores.
When you go make sure you have plenty of time because the owner is a talker. He will probably take you around the back of the warehouse and show you all of the options and how he makes the mattresses. He also has all the “top” mattresses back there that he has ripped open to show you their crap construction. When I got mine he had just gotten a S&F mattress. He took out a box cutter and cut it open in front of me and showed the gauge of springs they used and then showed his springs. He also showed that these high end companies foam mattresses use good foam and glue it to shitty foam. It was actually pretty interesting.
One note of advice - whatever ETA he gives you on making your mattress add at least 2 weeks.

One hyphenated word, Tempur-Pedic…

No real BR OG would sleep on anything else
Edit: the best way to make your visit shorter without getting the unabridged encyclopedia history of the mattress industry is to call and say you want the Cadillac in whatever size you’re ordering, and just go pick it up when they call you.

We had a shitty mattress for years. But the bullet on a tempurpedic luxe breeze. One of the most expensive purchases my broke arse ever made. I genuinely think it’s worth. I’m sure there are others that are cheaper and comparable, but we will have this mf for 10+ years so I was okay with the price. We don’t use the adjustable base much so you could skip that

zinus brand on amazon
Watch the price, occasionally a california king is 260ish.
The best mattress I've ever had.
Much better than the Sealey crap I had. And NOT made in CHINA
Edit: the tempur-pedic has been relegated to the guest room. The Sealy had been cut into the shape of the back of the SUV for a camping bed.

Got a Casper mattress about four years ago. Firm, but not a rock. No box springs necessary, it sits directly on the slats on the frame so there's no bounce to it. Rooms To Go on Siegen may carry that brand. I'd definitely suggest lying down on one at the store before buying just to make sure you'd like it.
