Cultural values change over time, and in civilized societies they venture more liberal in time, but it's not a linear progression. The Left made some major gains in the 2010s, and kind of went too far. In a normal society this would push it back with a conservative snap, and the Left would have to regroup and become the counter culture again.
The polarization that started under Bush, ramped up under Obama, and went ape shite under Trump, is preventing this natural flow. The Left pushed too far, has claimed their spot, and drove a philosophical stake into the ground...and it's leading to absurd consequences. Most people don't support this and may lie in public to avoid being cancelled, but deep down want it to go away.
It looked like things were heading back in 2021 but the Dobbs decision ramped up the Left again, with an issue that was much more supported by moderates. Gave this issue a little more life.

The vast majority of this shite inflames where people are tolerant of it or actively encourage it.
Urban centers hold most of our population. Urban centers are also liberal. The "public backlash" isn't nearly as strong as you may think. In fact, I would venture to say there's no wholesale backlash at all and this shite is only just getting started.

I read that over 85% or something like that of the people who claim to be trans have not had surgery to change sexes. So the percentage is way less than that if you don’t count people in drag as trans!

I have a few ideas for this and have had the same exact question for sometime:
1. Hoping to prepare society for transhumanism
2. A color revolution to protect American elites (Tucker Carlson has posited that all of the LGBTQ stuff popped up right after occupy wall street)
3. De-populatipn for climate change
4. Just a sad insane attempt at having a "cause" by a society that hates traditionalism, most especially religion. (Have replaced spiritual purpose with "fighting for the little guy")
5. The inevitable course for the end of the ideals born from the sexual revolution
