The last 8 year, really 12 (Jindal’s second term was basically him running around Iowa & New Hampshire) our governors/ legislators have basically looked around and say meh, this is the best we can do.

bullshite, I pay taxes so my kid can go to school. Why should they have to do the same? If there was no TOPS, my kid would already be gone.

Wouldn’t know it by the traffic.

Because people with no intention of college or having kids go to college are paying for it.

If you accept a TOPs scholarship, you should be required to work in Louisiana for a set amount of time or a % of your check returned to the state if you leave Louisiana. Consider it a 0% interest loan

TOPS is the problem no one wants to address. Smart kids gets their free education & leave. In addition to tightening up the requirements, there should be a post-graduation residency requirement or you have to pay it back.

Grads move away because there's a lack of entry-level white-collar jobs here. More people would stay if those opportunities were in abundance.

I know many people who left to get their careers started, some came back, and many didn't. Before the state of LA worries about TOPS they need to address the business climate.

that's the point. why should LA taxpayers foot the bill for TX's workforce?

TOPS is antiquated and needs to go, or at least be completely restructured.

Well talking of brain drain. A lot of out of state kids or kids from Nola end up going to the Nola universities. None of them are going to live anywhere in Louisiana except for New Orleans after they graduate.

I’d rather do that than fund generations of welfare

but I think the state subsidized tuition for all students back then. Southeastern was like $950/semester. LSU was around $1200.

Correct. The state use to absorb about 80% of the cost. Now it's maybe 20%. The State has divested in education and is reaping the rewards.

It's a shell game.

State basically moved money from the "subsidize college" bucket to the "TOPS" bucket.

At this point, TOPS is so easy to get, it's essentially free college for all LA students. If you can't meet the TOPS standards, you have no business going to college at that time.

I guess we could stop TOPS and also keep subsidizing at 20%. But if we do that, the student enrollment will drop like a rock, which means, even more underused campuses that we won't have the balls to close.

This is the plight of Stephen Waguespack in the LA governor's race. We definitely need pro-business leadership to keep AND attract talent. We can deal with our poor/uneducated citizens if we add a lot more functioning members to our pool.

LABI causes more problems for this state than they solve.

Remember when everyone said Nagin was gonna fix New Orleans becuase he was a businessman, not a politician?

Waguespack is one of the ones yelling loudest about the state giving away parish tax money. Waguespack is one of the ones who pushes the most for the state picking winners and losers.
