How good was he?
I haven't listened to a bad song yet and they seem so relevant even today.

I can hear some jazz influences in some of his music. Some of his songs have a heavy use of the saxophone.

One of the greatest country artists

Among the greatest of all time.
I was playing some music of his while my little nephew was over. And he asked, “Who is this, Uncle TIK?”
“It’s Merle Haggard. He’s one of the greatest country songwriters who ever lived.”
“He’s better than Luke Bryan?!”

He was part of the Bakersfield sound of country music. He had the Hollywood leading man looks in his early days.

He was outstanding! I am glad I saw him live.

Maybe the best of all time. Country music at its purest. Yet he could be catchy pop sounding, old school or Western swing. He pulled it all off.

He was the real deal. Actually did time, unlike Johnny Cash.
Great writer, singer, and guitarist.

I’ve been a Merle Haggard fan for many years now, and have always enjoyed singing his songs as well. Classic country at its finest. He was the ultimate working man’s poet and story-teller.
I got to see his son Marty perform live several months after Merle died. I was able to meet him after the show, and he was a great guy.

Cash would have went to prison if it wasn't for his name. Merle Haggard didn't have that luxury before he was famous.

Do you think he would make it in Nashville today?

Nah, Merle wasn't doing songs about pickups, ice cold beer, sundresses, etc

He was unbelievable IMO. What gets me about him is how good his voice is. I will always post this when the subject of Merle's greatness comes up.

He is one that I should have made it my business to see live.
Truly one of the best of the best.
So many songs about life.
