One of my great regrets is not seeing Merle.

At least I caught Don Williams and he was amazing.

Yeah I don't believe he would have made it today.

People just love them some Luke Bryan more.

He was no Luke Bryan. That’s for goddamn sure.

BTW I could not finish typing that without snickering.

No one right now in country music has the same level of talent as the Hag including Chris Stapleton.

Just going strictly as an artist, he probably is the goat of country music.

I love this video of Merle doing impersonations of other country singers. He was insanely talented. Voice of the working man. Some people used to take their cap off at the bar when Merle came on

He was the real deal. Actually did time, unlike Johnny Cash.
Well, I try not to judge people by their criminal records...

Ironically, Haggard's biggest flaw was he sometimes came off as "sweet" sounding (again ironically, the same thing he criticized Glen Campbell for), like a conventional crooner. Maybe he felt he had to smooth some of his rough edges for popular success.

That's the reason I would rank Buck Owens higher (if we are in fact ranking today). Even when crooning something like "Together Again" or Dylan's "Love Minus Zero" Buck never lost his inner hillbilly,

I don't believe the Hag changed his voice but that is how he speaks and sings.

It's impossible to pick a favorite. Red Bandana is one of my favorites.

So many spectacular songs.

I think he would have certainly made it on the Texas scene.

The name of it is "Carolyn"
