Am I okay with my current financial situation to join a country club?

My monthly take home pay, after taxes, is around $7000. Around $3000 of my income goes towards:

1. Mortgage
2. HOA
3. Streaming services
4. Car insurance

My wife works and she handles:
1. Utilities
2. Cable/Internet
3. Childcare(1)
4. Most of the groceries

We are both remote and so don’t have to worry with gas much and both our cars are paid off with less than 50k miles. We have no debt besides small student loans she currently has and is handling.

This country club membership would be around $280 a month. I guess I’m looking for reassurance that I’m okay to join haha.

I’ll have around $3500 a month to spend on miscellaneous stuff then invest the rest using my financial advisor.

Live a little. Join.

What’s the worst that will happen, you resign and save the money each month.

Somebody in here will tell you to invest it instead blah blah blah and they may have a point, but after burying a 47 year old friend last week I’ll say enjoy life a little. It’s short.

So you make like 80k a year and you want to join a country club? This seems to confirm my suspicions about country clubs

Don't over-complicate it.

If you can meet your short- and long-term goals while also paying to go to your country club, then do it if you want. Like someone else said, if you join and feel like it's too much, resign your membership. Problem solved.

Consider also how much quicker you might be able to reach certain goals if you use the $280 elsewhere. That may be a reason not to join.

Even at $400 a month for entertainment isn't bad. Especially if you have friends/family that are members. Also not a bad place to network.

Does your pay after taxes include already paying for health insurance and 401k?

If you don’t mind me asking, what is the club initiation fee. I looked at one a few weeks ago and it was $43k.

then invest

You always pay yourself first. Then all the other shite.

At $280 sure why not.

If you’re a golfer then at $50 a round it starts making sense pretty quickly….especially if they have other resources you’ll use.

You have 3500/month in disposable. MORE than enough to solidly invest while having plenty left over for living.

The 280 per month will be money well spent if you do golfing/tennis/pool 8-10 times per month. Do you play both?

Once a week tennis and once a week golf and you are getting a lot of bang for your buck if the grounds and facilities are in decent shape and maintained.

You can afford it, frick the haters.

Country Clubs are jam up. Access to a pool if you don’t have one, golf, bangin’ Sunday lunches, and shoulder rubbing with people of equal or greater means.

Also, starting your kids early on the country club sports instead of thinking little Braxtyn’s got a big league curve will be a much more pleasant use of time and money.

My hunting club is $5,000 per year, my duck blind is $8,000 per year, and I make the exact same as you dude. I don’t regret a single penny of it. Don’t listen to these boring friks, you gotta live a little!!!

You’re asking for advice on a $280/month expense, dumb frick. What do you think?

I’ll be honest, I’ve never heard of a country club that is anywhere near that cheap.

Can it help you in any capacity work wise? Can you write off any of the meals/drinks as a result?

There are often hidden values in being a CC member. Especially at the right club.

I've been on the verge of joining Prairie Dunes for 2 years. If it wasn't un-playable for 4-5 months it would have been done already.

I would do it. I think our CC has a buy in of 75k and a three year wait list. Needless to say, we aren’t members. I doubt I would join regardless of the waitlist.
