What's your experience with Japanese Maples? I want to plant a couple outside of our bedroom window. THe area gets morning sun until about 10 or 11 then full shade. Figured this would be a good spot. I was looking at the Coral Bark Japanese maples.

Best bet will be Bloodgood. Seems to be acclimated the best to this region and you can find good specimens locally. Coral Bark will be tough to find a good one that won’t cost a fortune.
There also a different green variety that would do well but I can’t recall the specimen name

Cleggs on Siegen has the best selection locally.
I have 5 in my backyard and I just planted a few more. I believe Craw has a bunch that he grows.
Look for the "Baton Rouge." I have one in my backyard in full sun and it has done well. It is very small so far, as is the nature of most Japanese Maples. It is a coral bark tree that was grown from a tree found somewhere around Houston that performs in our zone in full sun, where most do not.
Your positioning sounds ideal. With the exception of the Baton Rouge (I just bought and planted a second in my front landscaping) mine are positioned to be shaded by around 11.
Check out ConiferKingdom, MrMaple.com and MapleRidgeNursery.com. I just visited Maple Ridge last month while I was in Atlanta. Cool selection.

We have a Crimson Queen Japanese Maple in Baton Rouge. It's planted in part shade and protected from the afternoon sun. Purchased it at Doug Young in Forest Hill. It's a beautiful little tree.

They're such cool trees. My yard has very limited shade. If I had a large shady lot, I'd probably collect these things like my kids collect Pokemon cards.

ive got one outside my kitchen window. it gets indirect sun most of the day and seems to be doing really well. Ive had it about 8 years. The beautiful maroon leaves are starting to come back for spring. I love it

I love Japanese maples. My front yard in BR is completely shaded by a canopy of live oaks. Would one do well in that environment?

Yes, filtered sunlight is optimal for Japanese Maples. Depending on the aesthetic appeal Tamekeyama, Bloodgood, and Coral Bark are all good varieties.

LSU runs an Ag research facility in Hammond. It's been a few years since I've seen any updates but they had something like 150 varieties planted for performance testing in our climate. You can easily go broke going down the rabbit hole of varieties.
I bought a handful from ConfierKingdom in Oregon. Those have all done great. I also bought a few conifers from them that theoretically should have performed well in our zone. Several of those died suddenly.
Last month I found myself at Maple Ridge nursery in ATL area, I mentioned this as they had a lot of the same plants. They mentioned that the root stock was probably the culprit. She told me the variety of root stock they use for conifers there. I have no clue if there are options like that for Maples. But it makes me more likely to buy maples from closer to our zone.
There's also a maple specific nursery a bit outside of Auburn. Never been, but I bet it's cool.
Found it... Millstone Japanese Maple Nursery

Believe it or not, lowes has bloodgood, coral bark, and a fringe leaf right now, all right around $100…smaller pot size, but good tree size for the price. Section will vary by location! I have 2 in my yard, and as others have stated love them. The coral bark fall color change is phenomenal..my bloodgood is in the ground, CB in a large pot, only because I’m not committed on a location for it yet!

Though no Japanese maple will shine as they do in cooler, less humid climates - leaf scorch in the heat of summer is inevitable in our area - some of the cultivars mentioned have done very well for me - Bloodgood, Coral Bark Sango Kaku, and Baton Rouge (ordered on line). Bloodgood and Sango Kaku are usually available at local nurseries.
I’ve purchased several more heat tolerant cultivars on-line from Mr. Maples LINK - do not hesitate to order from them if you see some you like. Hot Tamale, Gold Digger, Hot Blonde, Hot Sauce are among heat tolerant cultivars I’ve ordered from Mr Maple.
