re: LDWF raid Metairie home to confiscate pet nutria

Not a problem when the family pet is well taken care of and safely contained, but when they escape or the owner turns them loose for whatever reason, they cause problems for the local ecosystem that may not be easily fixed. See Florida with all the invasive reptile problems due to pet owners releasing their exotic snakes when they got too big.
This is the reasoning, and it’s completely understandable that wildlife and fisheries would be concerned, but the tactical gear and the FBI ish raid was extra.

This isn’t over; I can see a local attorney filing a nutria protective order/injunction for free to help these people. This is over zealous law enforcement Maximus.

Taking obvious bait at face value and unironically defending this thuggery are both terrible looks

Not sure what the laws are in that state. That could fall on deaf ears.
Although, it would be nice for the rat to come home to its parents.
Laws are laws tho.

And 100s of laws are not enforced everyday. This is overreach.

Meh. I think society’s thirst for outrage is a bigger problem than this LDWF story. If you disagree, that’s your prerogative.

Which makes dying on this hill when the behavior is actually outrageous so confusing to me. This is where you’re taking the stand?
As you say, your prerogative, I suppose

Nothing wrong with counter arguments about the agents.
Sensationalism can get bad. Nice to have a counter balance.

Did you not grow up in south Louisiana? We’re not talking about a CNN BLM story here. We have wildlife agents trying to steal a family’s pet nutria the day after a heartwarming story about it. Unless someone is stealing everyone’s dong phoung king cake, it doesn’t get much bigger..

Dying on what hill exactly? I pointed out that the stuff about tactical gear was made up, that they were going to send the nutria to the zoo, and that the family called the Times-Picayune after saying they planned to turn the nutria over.
If anyone thinks it’s still BS at that point, I have no problem at all with it at all. In fact, my actual opinion about the matter is that I think most game wardens are assholes and I think this is entirely in-character for LDWF. I think it’s shitty for that family and that LDWF should back off.
But I also think people should be able to form an opinion without all of the fricking histrionics.

Just a fricking retarded use of resources. Huge overreach by the government on this one. I get it if it's something dangerous like a lion but a fricking rat? Send those dudes out with a .22 in the marsh and kill 5 live ones. Tell the folks they have to get the rat fixed and let people be free

Yeah, they definitely showed up in tactical gear. (If by tactical gear you mean the same shite they wear to work every day.)
You’ve been conditioned to accept anyone with a badge on their chest can and should be armed. This is how things like Waco happen.
Leave the weapons behind when you go to take someone’s pet. The fact this agency is empowered to walk into any place of business in the state armed should give everyone pause. If you think you might have a problem, get a local police officer involved.
A threat to human health and the environment - for fricks sake just get the rat neutered, vaccinated and let’s move on. The State’s nutria problem isn’t in people’s homes, LDWF.

quote:This was taken out of the wild. By being a pet it's potential destruction has been neutralized. They aren't going to release it, but if they did it would not be an additional animal to the mix since it was removed from the wild as a baby.
Its an invasive species that does a ton of damage to the coastal marshes and levees...The idiots who don’t secure their animals or turn them loose when keeping the pet becomes inconvenient ruin it

The Wildlife and Fisheries Department said the nutria would be sent to the Baton Rouge Zoo, to be part of an educational exhibit about the overreach of government.

I will say good for the son. The family is going to lose this fight against our benevolent overlords, but good for him taking matters into his own hands and giving the rat a stay of excommunication.
When the LDWF insists on being armed and pedantic bureaucrats, all we can do as citizens is peacefully waste their time as much as possible.

Big tough guys. Look at my badge and gun. If I lived next door I'd harbor the fugitive.

They are perfectly happy to let a bunch of them live in the West Esplanade canal (probably 25-50 yards from this house) but it's a problem for these folks to take in an injured one?
Kind of outrageous
