get out of the city for sure. mt hood was cool and west on the beach was cool but cold when I went.
The city is a complete dump unless you are interested in seeing tons of crazy methed out bums. sad because it is a beautiful city except for the insane amount of trash and bums.

Have family in that State, so have been quite a bit.
Despite what you see and hear, and yes there are some issues, it's still a neat city.
If just one day? Some high level suggestions:
Go to Mt. Hood
Multnomah Falls (not too far away)
Willamette Valley for wine tasting
Locally, the Japanese Rose Garden is kind of pretty
I think the true beauty of the State is going to the Coastal areas, Crater Lake etc. But that'd take more time.
Things to do

Katchka is excellent. I had zero experience with Russian food beforehand but really enjoyed it

My son lives in Eugene. Was thinking of going to Portland because neither of us have been.
Sounds like we will do something else! Haha!

There are a lot of great craft beer places. Great Notion and Modern Times are good choices. If you are a beer snob I can tell you more places. There are some great strip bars like Union Jack's and Sassys that are not like any strip bar youve been In. It's like a bar with guys and girls hanging out and there happens to be suicide girls stripping, full nude. I highly recommend.very chill. Kens artisan pizza is awesome, he had another restaurant in Portland where he received a James beard nomi but that has closed . Ex Novo is another great beer place

We had a fantastic dinner at the Ringside Steakhouse, went up Mt Hood and visited the gorge. The area outside of Portland in beautiful. We also went to Seaside where Lewis & Clark ended their expedition

While I understand a lot of hate and issues plaguing Portland, most is largely unwarranted, as I thought it's a pretty cool city to visit.
Fantastic food scene, great breweries, and world class wine from Willamette Valley in its backyard. It's also full of tons of historic walkable neighborhoods. Like a small town that doesn't know it's a big city. Also, the Oregon coast is a full day minimum trip if you want to actually get out of your car and explore, which you should.
Few things I enjoyed in/around Portland:
- We had a good dinner at Canard. Casual version of the nextdoor fancy sister restuarant, Le Pigeon.
- St Honore Bakery
- Definitely a coffee/tea city, Coava Roasters for great beans
- Japanese Gardens and Rose Garden. Beautiful park to visit.
- Pick a brewery, any brewery - some focus on sours, etc
- Silver Falls State Park - 7-8 mile hike through about a dozen beautiful waterfalls
- Columbia River Gorge - Multnomah Falls, Horsetail Falls, Dog Mountain Trail was epic and all within 30 min
- Willamette Valley is beautiful driving through the vineyards, hills, and towns. If you want to do a wine tasting, Alloro Vineyard is really nice and much closer in to Portland

Portland is great to visit. I wouldn't want to move there but its great to visit.
Salt and Straw Ice Cream is amazing.
As mentioned, they have great breweries.
The food carts are awesome and pretty cheap.
Multnomah falls area does reservations in the summer so find out before you go. Driving down that valley is pretty.
Mt Hood area is beautiful.
The coast is in the other direction and equally impressive.
It will be wild for you to see all the tents and junkies everywhere. The city itself is something else with all that. There are homeless encampments everywhere. You aren't moving there so it is interesting to see.

Head to Florence then take 101 north to Newport and loop back to Eugene.

Oregon is clustered together pretty well. Lots of cool places within 2 hours of Portland. Cannon Beach to the west. Willamette valley just south. Hood River and Mt Hood to the east.
We went to the Scotch House in downtown Portland the night before flying home. Pretty cool hidden little place. I had some duck pasta dish that was incredible. Their scotch and whiskey menu is as good as it gets. I had 2 Islay scotch drinks when we sat down and pre-dinner. I later had Pappys and some tasty Japanese whiskey before we left. Great place to visit.

The hate and issues are totally warranted, but it is still a cool place to visit. Portland was much cooler when better governed. Just got back from a weekend trip and the homeless issue and drug problems are real and plague all parts of the city except for the ultra rich areas in the west hills.

Go to the coast. Literally anywhere on the Oregon coast. We did a north to south trip down the coast, and for someone who had never been to the west coast, I was mesmerized. I already can’t wait to go back

Don't listen to these morons, Portland is a beautiful city.

Yeah, I am somewhat confused by all the hate. I was there last summer and stayed downtown near the river. I saw one homeless guy the whole time. I expected it to be a nightmare, but love it and my time there.
I am sure there are bad parts like every city, but I never felt unsafe and where I went was clean.
Eta: I was at the Marriott Downtown Waterfront near Portland State University. Perhaps a local can add context to my experience.

I’ve been four different times. The last time I visited was in May of last year. I only saw a couple of homeless people honestly, BUT there are tent cities EVERYWHERE. That’s the issue. And also old RV’s parked damn near everywhere with old tarps set up and shite. It’s pretty trashy and off putting to me. All that said, I absolutely love the city. Great beer and even better food. Tons of things to do and it’s very central to a lot of beautiful locations like Cannon Beach, the Columbia River, and Hood River. And don’t forget about the wine nearby. I would recommend it to anyone to visit, but to be cautious of the homeless situation.

I don’t consider Portland to be a dangerous city but I’m NOLA trained and certified.

The mayor has decided to clean up the city a bit. Imagine thinking his policies would actually work.
I was just in pdx recently and where I expected to see rvs and tent cities they had been removed.
The places I visit in the city I don’t really encounter homeless folks luckily.
