Nephew was accepted into his dream college out of state and is strapped for cash.

Did the FAFSA, can only get 5K in federal loans because the parents make $$$. Parents are separated and will not assist with his college tuition or expanses. Nephew plans to work throughout college, however, with scholarships, he may be short up to about 15K - 20K per year.

He is looking at other types of student loans and work programs while in school, however, was curious if anyone had any suggestions.

So odd, seems like that's who they'd love to loan out $ to.

What school is he going to?

Unless he is going somewhere for a specific degree with a high ROI this is setting himself up for a mess after graduation.

Is there a particular program he's going there for? Seems like a fool's errand otherwise.

will going to the out of state "dream" college result in more pay? If so, what is the number of years it will take to pay off the loans vs what an instate school costs vs the extra pay

I just went through this with my daughter. she applied for for Rice, Vandy, GT, UNC-Ashville, Tulane....

thankfully she was not accepted to any. depending on her final degree choice, none would have had the pay back difference between going to an instate school with top tear tops and the schools additional dorm/fees scholarship

unless your nephew is going to get a much higher paying job only because they went to the dream school, they should stay instate.... otherwise they will be paying off loans before buying a house and/or starting a family.....

I have to agree with the sentiment here.

He was also accepted into Loyola over in NOLA. Even with Tops, $$$$. No way.

Public university here in La. is the answer, unless his family decides to help out of course.

He was hoping to go to a smaller school, however, he may just have to handle up and do what is best here in state.

Can he meet with a counselor at the school he wants to go to and talk to them about transfer credits. Specifically, find out what BS courses he'll need to take that are unrelated to his major and can be transferred from his local community college. Knock those out over the next 1-2 years w/ his TOPS help. Work as planned but save everything he can and finish at the dream college.

After busting arse for 2 years and saving money, his dream school may change

Great school for working at Applebee's with 200k of student debt, while begging biden every day on twitter to pay them off for you.

This is the Money board, and financially, this is about as bad as buying NFT's.

A tiny liberal arts college in Arkansas is your nephew’s “dream” school? Jesus

He is a bit out there for sure. Said Hendrix will match LSU tuition so if he can work while in school, he may be ok. He said he loves the campus and wants to get out of La. That being said, if he applies in state, he would probably receive tops and at least some scholarships $$.

I don't get the appeal but a lot of folks in Arkansas do the same

My advice is go to community college for 2 years and graduate to a 4 year university. If that is his dream school then he can graduate with little to no debt.....................................that's the real dream.

Same with our son. 35 ACT and National Merit Finalist. Couldn't get a sniff at UNC or GT. Decided to go to Tuscaloosa with the 5 year STEM-MBA full ride. Hope he realizes what he is in for. my wife has started buying me crimson shirts with the A on them. I don't know if I can do it LOL.

Dont do it. Student debt is crippling.

Google the Academic Common Market to help waive out of state tuition. Thats what I used to go to LSU from out of state without paying out of state tuition.
