Early Spring Rattlesnake

Took the family to Oconee National Forest for a hike and to look for snakes. We saw a rat snake and a timber rattlesnake. Already the third rattlesnake of the year on the Georgia piedmont.
Best time of the year!

Leaving that demon where you found it for the next family is like someone who knowingly passes std's to people for fun....
Rational person: Judge .410 to the head, and one extra shell for good measure.

It’s the national forest, not your backyard. Also it is time for a forest fire. They benefit all wildlife.

People who are this irrational about snakes should just stay inside.
Watch where you put your hands and feet and there's a 99.99% chance you'll never have an issue.
You don't go to yellowstone and kill every bear you see. Same thing.

I saw a water mocassin yesterday out by the kenner boat launch. Same little area is the only place I have ever seen actual cottonmouths in Metairie/Kenner. I usually see water snakes all over, but this is the second one I have seen in the same area.

I read a statistic years ago that implied something like over half (60% or so) of snakebites were on the hand/arm of white males under the influence of drugs or alcohol. So don't get fricked up and catch snakes.
ETA: LINK
From the article: "According to Steve Bennett with the Department of Natural Resources, 70 to 75 percent of those were accounted for by people trying to catch or kill that venomous snake."
""Right off the bat if you stop and you leave that snake alone you're going to eliminate 70 to 75 percent of the bites, now 60 percent of those involved alcohol, so there you go," said Bennett."

Man it's scary how well they can hide. I'm glad that most rattlers are polite and warn you. You're braver than I am, I won't get close enough for a pic. I just haul arse and leave them alone. Pretty snake, though.

That first pic of the rattlesnake terrifies me about walking in the woods with my 4 and 6 year old boys. No telling how many times we’ve walked right by/over a rattler like that. I’m always afraid I’m going to sit right next to one in the dark turkey hunting when I’m getting set up
