Nobody was married.

All single-

Andy
Barney
Aunt Bea
Floyd
Goober
Gomer
Sam
Howard
Ernest T Bass
The Darlings
Helen
Thelma Lou
Clara

The only married person was Otis, and he stayed drunk.

Well the Darlings daughter got married to a guy in the army during the first few Seasons. But what a simpler time….

You had that married couple who always fought and broke dishes. Andy tried making them be nice to each other (Mornin' dear. Mornin' honey.), but that made them legitimately miserable. Turns out that they were perfectly happy fighting all the time.

Charlene Darling was married to Dud Wash. Though she still tried to throw that booger on Andy when Dud went off to serve his country over seas.

I lived through this era, makes sense to me

Sign seen in a bar in my younger days

"If you drive your husband to drink, please drive him here"

Between the wife and the MiL, no wonder booze was the drug of choice from the 40's to the 80's.

I always assumed Floyd was gay. He was the camel’s nose under the tent. Look where we are now.

Helen was a raging bitch. Andy could have done better. OTOH Barney was punching way above his weight with Thelma Lou.

I actually go to Mount Airy, NC about three or four times a year. Small, quiet, and quaint. They also have a couple nice beer joints.

I used to watch that show and think how in the world are their so many single, attractive women in a small town?

The only people who caused trouble were the mountain people like the Darlings and Ernest T, but it was mostly silly stuff. Out of towners were always the swindlers and crooks.

Ernest T going to school and showing them how he counted is all time great tv.
