Since I am an amateur historian, I find this particularly interesting. Although I understand taking the name of people off building when it’s later revealed that they were completely POS, they did this simply because he owned 3 domestic slaves. (Like every wealthy Virginia planter at the time)

Hence, his ancestors have said, “OK if you want to do that that’s fine but then return to us the current value of all of our family donations to the school which is about $3.5 billion dollars in today’s money.” They wanted to point out that if their family name is so tainted it needs to be removed for their buildings surely that would make the money they’ve given tainted as well and the only the way to fix that is to return it. What makes this particular interesting is it this family is one of the principal founding families and financiers of this university.

To be frank, I agree with him 100% and if anybody wants to take any members of my families names off of any buildings etc, I am absolutely OK with that as long as they provide the decedents the current value of their previous gift and all the family money that have been given to those particular colleges and we’ll call it a day. (And I will super retire in excess luxury m.)

We were definitely slave owners and fought in the Civil War for the Confederacy, if that helps.

Ah, Richmond Spiders “What a tangled web we weave when we go work and try to deceive”

Of course, the University has yet to respond and probably will not.

Glad he stood up to it. Is there any chance he wins the case?

Every Progressive voter in America would take their political enemy's money if they could. These actions should shock no one.

They hate you with a passion, but cannot install their Utopia without your labor. They stick their hand out while they insult you.

I don't think interest is earned on a gift but the original amount should be returned.

Removing someone’s name from a building is not the same as saying a person’s donations to said institution is not appreciated/recognized. It’s just saying that for the future, the institution no longer wishes to associate itself with this name. So the family is welcome to stop donating, but it has no right to request its previous donations be returned.

(Not that I agree with the removal of the family name, but I don’t agree with the reasoning behind returning any moneys)

They should get the money back.

Yesterday while at the CircleK I told the clerk that she was a “ slave” to her phone. She’s black. The blue and green haired fat girl behind me went nuts.

The day before, the black clerk that is a nice person had some long white and black hair extensions up in a bun. I told that she looked like she fell in. some vanilla and chocolate swirl ice cream. Another fat girl and her skinny boyfriend went nuts.

I give “ 0” fricks.

What a load of crap. They have no willingness to accept Williams or his actions being a product of the times in which he lived.

quote:

“We recognize that some may be disappointed or disagree with this decision,” Hallock wrote in a letter to the university community sent when the decision to officially rename the law school was made in September. “We also recognize the role the Williams family has played here and respect the full and complete history of the institution.

I don’t think they really have a case for getting the money back unless it was explicitly conditional on the naming of the law school, but they are correct to point out the hypocrisy of the University.

Well, the article you linked said he also owned tobacco farms and his businesses owned a couple dozen more slaves. It also said the school hasn’t called the law school by the family name in over 20 years.

This honestly just reads as two sides trying to out virtue signal each other.
