I'm starting medical school in New Orleans this summer and while I'm excited to start medical school, I haven't been too excited about the idea of living in NOLA for four years. Is worth looking for a place to live in Orleans or would it be better to just live in Jefferson? Should I look into getting a concealed carry permit? Those are probably the two biggest questions I've asked myself, but I'm sure there are other issues I've yet to think abut

If there's a silver lining in all of this, I can't wait to see a New Orleans ER during Mardi Gras

Anyone have any advice on how to navigate these next four years without getting robbed or shot?

They have good cheap rentals in New Orleans East but just wear a bullet proof vest and avoid the interstate!

Live in Jefferson parish, stay on well lit streets if you have to go to NOLA at night be aware of your surroundings - just like you would with any large city

It’s not really that hard - my daughter’s friend is in nursing school down there and she’s still alive

What is your housing budget ? Your general safety will be determined on where you live. There are many safe areas in Orleans parish.

If you can get into med school in LA, surely you can get into med school somewhere better else where.

You’re going to get robbed. Hopefully not shot but the odds are higher than almost anywhere else in the world

Really hard to get in out of state. Most medical schools give high preference to in-state residents. My options were slim from the start

Get a 'burner wallet.' This is a wallet you keep in your back pocket - out of date credit card, 9 dollars cash in 1s, and other throw away business cards that can't be traced back to you. That's the one you hand to them when you're robbed -- and most likely you will be.

Get a box mini 'wallet' and keep that somewhere else on your person.

Good luck!

Who gives a shite about New Orleans. The fact that you decided to go to medical school is scary enough. Beware of the brain washing at every turn. Speaking from experience.

Westwego is where you want to be. It's the hottest part of town.

You would like the advice of people living here and you lead with this?

You should start by stopping being a gaping pussy.
