Good Job LHSAA. A team can get a Bye and have to travel in the second round. Losing money the entire time. What a damn joke.

The bigger issue is the semifinal and final format. Teams play 2/3 rounds for the first rounds but semis and finals are just one game.

The select division had voted to to make it 2/3 the whole way through but that got axed last Summer when select definition got changed.

De La Salle and the Willow School played the longest game in LA history yesterday… De La Salle won 2-1 in 22 innings at Avenger Field Uptown to clinch their district championship

Btw 11 years ago yesterday was the Emerson Gibbs game…

Ah I misread. I thought he was talking about someone waiting on a bye and an upset forcing them to travel.

Thoughts on best 2/3 in round 1? Maybe it’s kind of iffy if weather comes and it might cut down visiting team attendance if they feel like they have to get a hotel for the weekend

I been saying the lower seeded team should host the first game and then have a Saturday doubleheader but no one agrees

St. Amant playing their best baseball of the season right now. Since being shutout by Sulphur 11-0 on March 21st, they’ve gone 12-1, and are in sole possession of 1st place in the district. Gators are also up to 7th place in the power rankings. They’ve done a lot of work to get back into that top 8.

One more game to go against Live Oak. STA took game 1 yesterday 7-4. Also head coach Brandon Bravata got his 200th career win last night as well. He’s making the Gator faithful very happy with all the wins he’s had since coming to St. Amant. This team had some holes to fill with some of the talent we lost from last years team, but they’ve steadily improved every single week, and are playing their best baseball at the right time. Would love to see us wreak havoc in that 5A bracket again.

Please use the school name at least once so we know who you are talking about. Nobody knows who the "gators" are.

Is it really needed if 12 teams get byes?

A win against anyone gets you 20 points.

Any game win or lose gets you 2 points per class if the opponent is a higher class. A 4a team playing a 5a team gets a 2 point kicker. A 3a team playing 5a gets a 4 point bonus.

No kicker playing a team in the same class.

Any game win or lose gets you one point per opponent win. And that number goes up as the team you beat wins more games throughout the season. An early season win over a really good team is the gift that keeps on giving.

So a 4a team beating an 18-10 5a team gets:

20 points to win
2 points for beating a team one class up
18 points for the opponent wins

40 points total. And that number can go up if the 5a team wins some more games.

That same 4a team losing to the 5a team gets 20 points - 2 for playing up and 18 points for the opponent wins. But they don’t get the 20 points they’d have gotten had they won the game.

Average total points by number of games and you get a team’s power point ranking.

In broad strokes, the system tries to reward you for scheduling good opponents win or lose, and to punish you for artificially inflating your win/loss record by feasting on cupcakes.

It’s different than the basketball and football formula

They give you opponent’s win percentage x 34 (in basketball) or 10 (in football)

My constant complaint on here is that B and C teams exist for the rest of the state to add wins to the ratings (think of it like a food chain) and don’t exist in SE Louisiana leading to a geographical bias.

And because those B and C teams don’t exist, a lot of schools don’t have as many games played as others.

And with four to six 5A districts in close driving distance for everybody in SE LA, we tend to play those teams more, which leads to more parity (though for sure Barbe and West Monroe would still be great)

That’s an interesting point. And anecdotally the power rankings seem to bear that out.

For example the No. 4 seed in D1 select is Northwood, whose second best win of the season is a 42 point home victory over a 22-8 Class B school called Grace Christian

By contrast, the No. 4 team in D2 select is Teurlings, whose second best win of the year is 43 power points. But to get that many points they had to beat Brother Martin on the road.

You’d still have the same problem if you used opponent win percentage, so I don’t know what the answer is here

Only thing that comes to mind is a penalty for playing down, but then that kills the ability of those small schools to schedule non district games.

2/3 for the semis and finals would require LHSAA to use other venues besides that Sulphur travel ball complex. LHSAA is scared to piss off Sulphur.

I wish they'd go to individual sites for each of the classifications. Rotate the site annually between the classes/divisions.

One thing that should be included in the formula is district record. If the LHSAA forces everyone to play certain teams, then why should you benefit by playing them? Like why should anyone in that Laffy/LC 5a district be rewarded for just playing Barbe? District losses should count for 1/4 of a regular season loss.

Take districts away, then this becomes moot. But as long as districts exist, a district loss should punish you. Not reward you.

Not for much longer. The Youngsville Sports Complex either has, or is about to break ground on a group of high school sized fields, across the street from the soccer complex.

Once the LHSAA has a viable, one-site alternative for the HS baseball Final Four that’s located much more centrally for the vast majority of Louisiana, Sulphur loses most if not all of whatever leverage it has.

yep, as soon as youngsville is finished it will be way nicer than sulphur and will take the semis.

its stupid though, lhsaa should not be scared to piss off sulphur. they should have zero leverage.

Classes need to go away. Just have divisions. It's crazy for 4A to get bonus points for playing teams in their division.

by that same token why should you suffer by playing those teams?

In other sports there’s a rule that if you win a game, you should never get less power points than the team that beat you (for example if team A has 30 wins and beats a 5 win team for 25 points, but the team they beat gets 30

exactly or redo the districts to reflect the new divisions. the new divisions are perfect, just confuses some people, but its even as far as numbers across the board. I dunno even know why we need districts though, not like the winner and runner up get in anymore, its all power points now.

and we dont need a full 24 or 20 in the playoffs with all these byes to get to 16 imo. just do 16 and get it over with.

Live Oak defeated St. Amant last night 10-6. Live Oak and St. Amant are co-district champions in 5-5A this year. St. Amant dropped from 7th to 8th, but are still in that top 8. Live Oak at 5th and Dutchtown at 12th. When are they supposed to release playoff brackets? Everyone is done playing right?
