Not discounting how big Mardi Gras is for towns in Louisiana. It's still huge even if a fraction of those people show up. But they don't have an easy way to accurately track this and they tend to over estimate it to boost their own tourism and "economic impact" chops.
When it comes to Mardi Gras...multiply that number by .7 if the weather is nice. By .4 if the weather sucks.
New Orleans claims to get 1,000,000....its probably between 600,000-700,000.
Baton Rouge says they get 200,000. I think it's probably more like 140,000.
New Roads says they get 50,000. I think realistically it's closer to 35,000.

going for the first time in prob 25 years. Any tips on where to park?
Take 110 north to capitol access and park behind Dotd building. It's a bit of a walk to the route but you will avoid the shite show of traffic getting in and out.

You can sneak out through Choctaw this way after the parade and avoid a lot of traffic.

That part of BR sucks on a normal day. Can’t imagine it’s any better during a mediocre parade.

Downtown is pretty safe. I don’t know what you’re talking about.

Absolutely. Crowd has been over 150k for last 10 years when the weather isn't terrible.

Considering that a good bit of BR residents and other city residents will be going to the last weekend of Mardi Gras in NOLA to go to Endymion, this seems like a fat lie.

I honestly would like to know what exactly about that parade would make some one want to go more than once?
It was cool the once i went but there really was not a reason that i found that would make me go back
