Last night, was by most measure a really good game; but I could barely get into it because of the choppy presentation, mediocre announcers, constant distractions, tons of commercials and extra-long halftime.

It's become so overproduced and drifted so far away from how a usual game is played, that it's actually become difficult to watch. I understand that it's now more a media vehicle than a game, but when you dilute the game so much that fans of the actual game start to go away or ignore it, the other viewers will go away as well.

How they ever let Terrible Hat Terry Bradshaw run the show, I'll never know. He sounded drunk to me.

Have you watched a super bowl before?

No, no they won’t.

I didn’t watch a second of it this year. I’m usually just burned out on football by time the Super Bowl rolls around but normally watch anyway because it’s the Super Bowl. This year I didn’t really care for either of the teams so found something better to do

Once the game starts, it’s fine except for the fact that the crowd is usually quieter because it’s mostly a neutral corporate crowd.

The pre-kickoff stuff is out of control.

Man, it’s just WAYYY too overproduced

It’s always been this way, but lately it’s gone so far over the top that it just seems forced to me

Like the Super Bowl commercials….. they try so hard to be ‘Super Bowl commercials’, the majority of them missed the mark and were fricking terrible

They definitely need to scale it back some in my opinion

Did they really need 125 people, including 6 honorary guest captains out there for the damn coin toss?? It’s just too much

Yeah, they are getting worse and worse with the over-production.

Viewership and ratings have been declining rapidly since 2015, so yeah, they will.

They've been losing about 2 million viewers a year since then, so more and more production isn't helping. 2015 they had close to 115 million viewers and have steadily declined and dropped down to 98 and 95 million the last couple years.

The Super Bowls is one thing but what’s really bad is the opening game of the season. Remember when they had a greased up The Rock come out on the field in LA to bring the teams out? Ridiculous

Not really, it's been an over produced mess since the 90's. Sadly, the Super Bowl isn't produced for football fans, because they're watching it anyway. It's designed to draw in people that never watch football.

I think the difference these days is a lot of the people that only watched for the halftime show and commercials are skipping it because they release the commercials in advance and you can watch the halftime show on the internet within minutes after it's over.

I was at the Steelers vs. Seahawks Super Bowl in Detroit. When Antwaan Randle El threw the touchdown pass to Hines Ward on the reverse, you could almost single out the Steelers fans because the people cheering were so sparsely intermingled with the corporate ticket holders.

One of the biggest plays of the game and maybe 30% of the stadium was making noise. It was really weird to have such little response on such a big play.

This is due to streaming becoming more popular each year. Pretty steady average around 110-115 million viewers across all platforms the last 10+ years. Rams/bengals was 112 million last year.

They had a video package they rolled for the coin toss. The fricking coin toss.

Every time they showed Greg Olsen....I kept thinking "That's Fred from Scooby Doo". I don't remember thinking any thing about the announcing though other than the " forced to leave Alabama" comment. Maybe it's a good think I didn't notice much of the announcing and just watched the game

2022 LAR-CIN LAR +3 NBC 36.9 99.18M 6.0M
1.9M incl. 29.5 38.45M

Including streaming last year was 105 with the lowest combined viewership rating since 1968.

2021 Didn't top 100 million when including streaming and had a rating of 38 which was a low since 1968 that only went lower last year. 2020 was 103 million combined. 2019 was 100 million combined.

Steaming isn't significantly offsetting the loss of viewership.

Yep, other than the halftime, it's just a football game once they kickoff. Not all that different IMO

It is absolutely wayyyyyy overdone before kickoff but I don't get why folks complain so much about that. You know the exact minute the game will kick off, just tune in then if you don't like it and that quite literally solves your problem.

Need to also have it a week after the conference championships. Two weeks is too long.

It was the lowest rating since 1969. Viewership is different than rating.

Typical Super Bowl game from kickoff to end is nearly 45 minutes longer than an average game. The extra commercials and extended halftime make the game very choppy to me. Almost like suffering through a CBS broadcast of a SEC game.

I definitely agree with this. It was so damn hard to keep up with the game due to the start stop nature of the production.

It felt like the game had a severe case of ADD.

Yes it is. Viewership has been down, ratings are significantly down. Neither is a stat that the league can be happy about.
