What are y’all wearing for your early season Elk/mule deer hunts in the mountains? Recommendations are appreciated

Good lace up boot with ankle support. More or less a high dollar hiking boot. Waterproof is a must, but comfort and ability to stay on your feet is a must.

Early season, cold is not really an issue. I have some Irish Setters that have been awesome.

I wore some Danners I got to go last year and they worked out great. Basically needed running shoes at times it felt like.

Good hiking boots. I’ve used Salomon, merrel, and vasque and all have worked well. Just make sure they are comfortable and not too heavy as you will likely be putting in many miles.

Agree with this, if you aren’t in sharp rocks or sidehilling all day, you can get away with some pretty soft boots, it’ll be easier on your toes that way

Loved my vasque and put many miles on them. Couldn’t find the exact ones I liked and switched to oboz. They are comfortable and done well but the sole doesn’t seem to have held as well as the vasque.

Heard nothing but great things on crisipi

Regardless, bring mole skins

I need to figure out what the deal with my Danners are. They feel good but after awhile the top of my heel, bottom of Achilles starts killing me. Not sure if it is something economically off with me or I am lacing them too right on top or what. I switch to a slightly shorter boot and it goes away.

Another vote for the uninsulated Schnee’s Beartooth. Been very impressed with em.

I recently bought some uninsulated Kenetrek mountain extremes. Best boot by light years I’ve ever laced on my feet.

Third on Schnees. One fantastic boot. You don’t have to break them in. Just rock and roll

I'm hardcore Danner in the back country. Made in USA and Goretex. Also its one of the original modern hiking boots in terms of concept - lighter weight, traction, water resistance. Before this first generation of real hiking boots, you basically wore soldier trench boots for anything outdoors from what I understand.

The specific model here is "Light" and that is the model that was one of the first modern hiking boots. I'm on my second pair. The first pair lived hard and lasted forever.

Early season you want something that's almost a running shoe with ankle support, anything insulated and you'll be sweating.

I've used these Columbia boots for 5 elk seasons plus some other hunts/hikes, just retired my old pair and picked up a new one

I bought the Crispi Colorado's for a September elk hunt. They were great. Walked about 20 miles in them before going though.
