What will airfares do in the next few months? Europe specifically.

Planning to take the wife to Rome in October. Canceled trip in May 2020 due to Covid, and it’s time.
Roundtrip fares from MSY to FCO are running $1200-1400 per head (main cabin economy) for the fall. I’ve read some opinions that they will come down in a couple of months, while I’ve seen others that say they won’t get any better and to book now.
Is there a school of thought among the wise TB folks on this? Should I watch and wait? My dates are pretty fixed due to work.

Demand will be super high this summer because of all of us that didn't travel during covid. I bought my tix in late Decemeber and have booked all my lodging for a late June thru mid July trip and checking just now, the tix have gone up 38% since I bought. Buy now.

Fall is usually much cheaper than summer, but you won't get good deals until around summertime. Set up a Google flights alert and sit back

I’d set a flight tracker for May time OP and see what deals you see. Reason being that’s before peak summer and there’s often deals, similar to October. So if there’s deals in May you’ll likely get deals in October. We are a long way from October who really knows what could happen. $1200 is high, I’d think you can get it down to $800-900 at least.

I booked my April 2023 trip 8 months ahead of time. I was browsing and thinking about going then randomly on a Sunday night saw a big fare drop. Paid 1600 ish each for premium select which is typically double cheapest economy ticket. I did direct from jfk to fco. Spotted another fare drop and modified our tickets to add the Msy leg going. Even got an ecredit for the difference. Now I just have to figure out the jfk back to Msy part. But that is looking like 200 each for a one way. Last year we booked a July trip 60 days out and paid about 1800 Each Msy to Naples.

Just bought BTR to London leaving Memorial Day weekend. Best deal ended up being on British Airways via AA. Paid $1,085/seat.
Tried comparable dates for Paris, Dublin, and London out of MSY but couldn't get below $1,400 without doing some kind of multi-airline 24+ hour marathon each way. Ended up with a 12 hour red eye BTR to Dallas to London, then a 16 hour return (including 4 hour layover in Dallas). Still, with it flying straight to BTR, that'll save me at least an hour of drive time each way versus MSY.
I've watched prices since Christmas, and it felt like they may still drop a little, but I couldn't see them getting below $1K, especially out of BTR.

MSY to Denver for Mardi Gras week is that same
price, which is obscene.
