I do believe they need to move the story along now.
Enough gay shite

This is a complete waste of an episode. Does absolutely nothing to move the story forward.
Obviously we now know why the media was obsessed with it.

Yeah pretty useless episode. Great performances, but totally hindered by disgusting gay scenes.

There is zero point in putting that much character development into a character that isn’t a part of the show. Wasted episode.

Agree 100%

They went pretty gay with it and Frank left in the game.
Although the show wasn’t bad, it just doesn’t live up to the game.

It's funny seeing the difference between this board and Twitter. Everyone on Twitter is saying it's the best thing ever I'm watching it later tonight

You are definitely not normal

Waste of an episode. We were bored. The resident downvoter will do his thing and so no point expounding further except to say every character in the game was better depicted than what the show has done so far. Even Frank.

Have to agree, this one was a miss for me.
This is the first time I've wanted an episode to move along and end.

What I’m hearing is that it was the “Exposé” of episodes (LOST).

Glad you think so.

If wanting to see gay male sex is normal I’m a-ok being weird.
I’m not opposed to it. I appreciate brokeback mountain as a film. I loved the ending of Black Sails.
Still don’t overly like seeing gay sex. It’s ok if it grosses me out.

I’m just pissed they got AR15 so early in the show. I would have wrecked shite if I didn’t have to wait till end game to get one. Can’t believe the writers changed that shite and I’m pissed

So my thoughts are:
1. That was about what I expected. Hollywood can’t help themselves.
2. Putting aside the gay romance aspect, I don’t think the episode was completely meaningless. It set up a few things..
- Introduced us to the idea of raiders and life outside the QZ.
- Gave some backstory on Joel and Tess’ smuggling operation.
- Set Joel up as being capable and knowledgeable about the post-infection world. Recall that many were annoyed about how Tess seemed to run things, but it’s Joel who tells Bill about the raiders. Bill looks at Joel as the one who needs to protect Tess.
- The letter at the end was a nice touch, I think. Specifically the part where Bill’s letter could have just as easily said “Ellie” in place of “Tess.” I thought that was a pretty clever way to further set up Joel as Ellie’s protector.
3. I think the reality is that the show had to diverge like this at some point to tell stories about relatively unimportant characters, because otherwise it would get fairly stale just following Joel and Ellie nonstop. That being said, I think there are plenty of opportunities to do this with the other groups they will encounter as the story progresses. So I’m not convinced they had to expand on this particular story.
4. The good news is that I think the action should pick up considerably as we move forward from here.

The problem with this episode is that all of it was completely forced.
We could have had an epic episode where Ellie meets Bill, the three of them all travel to the school to fetch a battery, fight a Bloater, etc.
Instead, we get a 70 minute flashback that solely exists to push a homosexual relationship. No show runner would approve of something like this being done with a heterosexual relationship, because it destroys the pacing of the show and becomes an utterly pointless episode.
But because it was a gay relationship, they went all in at the expense of maintaining proper pacing and storytelling cadence.

I never thought I’d say this, but I’d love to see a 1000 word treatise from OMLandshark on this episode right now.
The melt would be epic.

Is that what happens in the game? Would have been far more entertaining.
