SigSauer vs H&K

I’m looking to buy my first pistol - primarily for home defense, but also may be the first of more to come. All the recommendations I’ve gotten are leading me toward a 9mm.
I went to the gun store yesterday and tried all the standard stuff…just feeling how it sits in my hand, weight, etc. Pending when I go back and actually rent and shoot some handguns, the SigSauers (P226 and P320 FS) and H&Ks (P30 and VP9) felt / looked the best to me. Prices were all about the same.
Are there any major pros/cons to either of these brands? I’m looking for something that will be easy to maintain, supply with accessories, buy ammo for, etc. it’s a starter gun, but I also want to make sure I don’t get a POS just because it’s my first one.
Everyone I talk to seems to say they’re all about the same as long as it’s a major brand and it’s just a merger of preference.
Any advice?

I have all 4 of the above pistols and my preference is for the VP9. Best trigger and ergonomics of them all. Also still some doubt about the 320 issues where it has fired while in the holster. Supposedly this issue is resolved but the doubt exists never the less. There have been no issues or recalls regarding the VP 9.
You are definitely doing it the right way by renting and shooting before you buy.

There’s a lot to research, and I don’t think you could go wrong between the two brands. Hammer or striker? Both companies also make a double action pistol as well (DAK and LEM). My HK is the latter…you can see it cycle here:

Kind of strange, but I like having a hammer on a weapon with no external safety. I think it’s more modern to have a striker fired gun though.

If you're left handed, go with the HK due to the ambi trigger guard safety and the ambi slide stop/release.
If not, either is a fine, reliable pistol.
Personally, I love the metal framed Sig's.

I'm partial to the VP9 as I own one. And from those you listed, the only one I've shot. I absolutely love it

I have the HK. Fits great in my hand. No complaints.

I have 3 of the 4.
Where are you finding P226 for the close to the price of the others?
P226 is one of the best pistols ever made. I have 2 old ones (West German stamps)
I shoot my VP9 much better than the P320, but the Sig has made improvements since they introduced it. The VP9 trigger is one of the best striker fired triggers out there (haven't shot a Walther).
basically, try to shoot each and decide which you like the best and buy it.

Own or have shot them all. My vote is Walther PDP. I have giant hands & the full size (18+1 rounds) is perfect for me. My wife (no pics) has the F-series (15+1 rounds) & it's perfect for her. I actually shoot that well also despite it being a smaller gun. Ambi also.

To be totally honest, I have ambi guns but don't use that side, hardly ever. I also can't use left-handed scissors to save my life

You're not going to go wrong with either, both are high quality brands. I went to buy a Sig, ended up with H&K. Hold both, or all 4 in this case, and your hands will tell you which one to buy.

If you like to customize your guns the P320 is the way to go. You can buy a 320 FCU and basically build the gun how you want. I just finished a build using a Parker mountain machine JTTC comp and barrel. Added a Gray guns trigger kit and it’s stupid flat and accurate.

If it doesn't say Judge on the side, you're doing it wrong.

The P226 is one of the finest handguns ever made. The H&Ks you listed are great guns as well. Pick whichever of these fits your hands the best and you'll certainly be going home with a fine pistol either way.

Get both. And then get a Glock 19 while you're at it.
You'll have/have owned all 3 within a couple of years anyway, just cut right to it

Short answer get both. Got an HK with a hammer and decocker and love it because I couldn't find a Sig P226 anywhere. Now Im seeing some pop up locally and I guess that will be on the to do list.
Sorry to sidetrack but is the Sig P2022 decent? Never really heard of it and local shop has two used ones and was thinking of trading a 365 xl for that but didn't know if it was like the lower class of a P226/P229.

don't do that. 2022 wasn't a particularly good pistol.

Everything you listed is superb. I own the P226 and it's hands down the best pistol I've ever shot. I haven't shot H&K though

I'd say don't limit yourself to full size, just because it's for home defense. However, you can't go wrong with....
Sig P226, P229, P320 (full or carry); H&K VP9-B (i don't care for the paddle mag release); S&W 2.0C; Walther PDP or F-series.... and probably least mentioned, the Canik TP9 Elite.

Home defense? You should consider getting a shotgun, not a handgun. 00 Buckshot.
