We've been going to the St. Pete Beach/Treasure Island area for about 40 years. We routinely stayed at some mom and pop places along the beach then would take a day to drive over to Orlando for whatever theme park we wanted to visit that year.
St. Pete is a more laid-back vibe because it's more retired folks and a beach community.
ETA: The kids always enjoyed going up to John's Pass to see the fishing boats come in and all of the pelicans in the area. We'd also walk down to the "Pink Building" (The Don Cesar Hotel) and get ice cream.

Bon Aire resort St Pete Beach

Make sure you schedule some red tide while you’re at it. The carpetbagging scum who have flocked here might need want to get a head start on carb loading refined sugar and white flour.

Clearwater is definitely nicer and more family oriented.
I dated a girl and her parents had a sweet house on the beach in St. Pete, so I spent more time there and it's fine. But Clearwater is better IMO.

Went to St Pete's this past year. I liked it because of how low key and didn't feel overrun with touristry beach goers. We stayed at the Cesar but next time might plan to stay at a boutique one "downtown".

It's been a long time since I've been there but I was pretty fond of Pass- a-Grille beach.

I agree Fort Desoto Park has the best beach if you dislike the commercialized Clearwater beach.
Also Desoto has an increasingly rare Florida dog beach.

Go to Fort Desoto, that place is badass. Also bring some fishing gear and check out the pier on Fort Desoto or the fishing area on the bay side up north past the pier, on the right.
Also check out the Skyway Fishing Pier, they have a north and south side, the 24 hour pass is good for either side. Take you a bait bucket with aerator and buy some live shrimp. Drop your line right off the side and next to a pier and let it sit on bottom. Mangroove snappers will pick it up and chew on it, so wait a sec before setting the hook. 10 inch is the minimum size limit, and these jokers fry up good.

I just sold my interest in a house on Vina Del Mar because I don’t intend to go back to Florida. But I did enjoy a nice dinner at the restaurant at the top of the Don Cesar and loved a grouper sandwich at The Hurricane. Very nice area.

If you’re looking for quality of sand and water, it is hands down Siesta Key. Several people mentioned it, and they are absolutely correct.

Research Lido Beach, or Lido Key Beach…it’s a massive beach with easy parking and a super cool little town with dining…all sorts cool drives north and south on those long skinny islands (depending on where you get on).
You can get on Anna Maria Island, the top of the islands south of Tampa, and drive down to Lido…the bottom, getting out along the way. They ride horses in the water, so that’s cool.
Lido is REALLY cool though, huge beach. Nothing sugar sand like 30A, but cool none the less.

Have only been to Clearwater. It kind of has a California vibe to it with restaurants and bars right off the beach. Also has a nice pier. The beach itself isn't that great compared to the Northern Gulf Coast. Sand isn't that nice and the water is a bit murky. I likely won't go back, but was cool to see once.

+1 for any of the three beaches on Anna Maria Island.
