Gym etiquette - 45lb plates

Is it considered impolite to leave a 45 lb plate on each side of the bench press bar? I tend to take everything else off but leave 135 lb there because I have have never seen anyone at my gym do less. Other people just immediately put them back on so I actually considered it helpful leaving them on. But was working out with a friend and he insisted it’s very rude not to remove everything from bar.

Remove the 45s. There are many people on the OT that can’t bench 135lbs.
Also, and think about it. If you can’t bench 135lbs, you’re going to struggle getting the 45s off. Bad etiquette to leave them on.

If the gym is coed, take them off

I always think of a beginner old lady coming up behind me. I wouldn’t want to leave 45s on and make her try and lug them off.

as mark rippetoe says...anyone who doesnt start with just the bar is a fool.
yes you take them off. most people, if warming up properly, will start with just the bar.

Take them off... It also lets everyone in the gym know the bench is free to use.

I’m convinced. Never realized it was an issue but I’m going to start taking them off.

How about if the equipment already has 45’s on it when you get on it? Sometimes I do my workout and leave it as I found it. But this still feels kinda lazy

Same. But I do slam them down on the floor after I take them off.

Pansies. I weld two plates on each bar. If you can’t bench 225, you don’t belong.
- elgaucho probably
Seriously though, take them off. Better question, leg press…leave a 45 plate on or strip it?

Seriously? What kind of gym do you go to, bunch of "bros"
Unless someone comes up to use the bench and tells you to leave them, take them off.
With the exception of Deadlifts, I start every single barbell exercise on its primary day with an empty bar.
Proper warmup is important.

Leave it better than you find it, always the rule.

This is how I feel about it.
I empty the bar after everything. If I see you walk away from a bar with weights on it, I put them right on the floor.

ALWAYS take off what you put on.
That's my rule.
But new gym bros that workout with no shirt flexing in the mirror for snap chats have no gym etiquette what so ever.
Weights look like a jenga board all over the place.

If it's not a powerlifting gym, I say take them off. Some powerlifting specific gyms are ok with this but most corporate coed gyms, you should unrack all of your weights.

I want to start my own gym and charge $1/ pound fines for weights left on the bars.
I bet the shite would stop. Or the trash would leave.

There’s a guy at my gym that leaves 2.5lb plates on, with collars, every fricking morning. Don’t know why but it makes me irrationally mad

I always start with the bar. I leave the bar naked when I'm done.
