I like what I see. Looks like a slight upgrade from Ali Gaye.

Seems very quick. May need to pack on a little muscle to face and SEC slate, but with our depth I think it is a solid pickup

About the same as Chaisson or Ojulari

Please do one of these threads for every transfer.

So I see from the first gif he has experience being held by an Alabama Olinemen, so I guess he will fit right in..

I have a Ray Thornton esque expectation
Maybe it’s the Texas-LSU transfer
But that’s my thought
Can add some pass rush, not much else. But more pass rushers is always a good thing

Ali Gaye played DE spot opposite of the pass rush EDGE spot. Different position from Ovie. Ovie plays Ojulari's spot.

This is me just being critical of these gifs:
1st one
Alabama RT really wins the rep there, drives him way behind the QB, because coverage is good downfield he ends up with a coverage sack probably 4-5 seconds after ball is snapped...it was good he kept going at least though to get that coverage sack being moved behind the QB in the first place
2nd one
Nothing too fancy here, but he just bull rushes the TCU RT into the QB about the same time their LT is being pushed into the QB. Better pass rush than the 1st one as he gets to QB much quicker and collapsed the pocket there
3rd one
Perfect rip move to get to the inside of the Alabama LT and forces a quicker than wanted throw by QB
4th one
Stunt move that the center completely whiffed on, he did well to get to the QB but I would put that one on scheme as much as anything there with the center being way late to cover the inside
Ovie I think will play a decent bit this year as he has a good overall skillset but he doesnt seem to possess the typical big time pass rush skills we've seen from other EDGE players here the last several years. He's definitely no Ojulari, Perkins or Chaisson in terms of rushing the QB.

Texas buddy told me that he started for them so he was surprised that he was leaving.

Being blunt here but they felt like they had some younger better talent that would play more than him at that spot this coming year.
He finished with 3.5 official sacks per NCAA, in the last 2 years at Texas playing almost 1,300 snaps, 539 of them on a pass rush. PFF actually has him with 7 sacks, but they count half sacks as full sacks too. PFF credited him with 50 total QB pressures (sacks, hits, hurries) in those 539 pass rush snaps. That's a pressure rate of about 9.3%.
Just to compare to Ojulari's career here. Ojulari had 127 total QB pressures in 907 pass rush snaps. thats a pressure rate of 14%. Doesnt sound like a big difference from 9.3% but 14% is 50% higher than 9.3% which is a pretty big difference. They also gave Ojulari 21 sacks, or 3x as many as Ovie, but he played less than double as many pass rush snaps as Ovie. If you look at Ovi'e sack rate per pass rush snaps compared to Ojulari, Ojulari would have had about 12 sacks in his 907 pass rush snaps using Ovie's sack rate....so obviously Ojulari did much much better there.

Ali Gaye was the biggest disappointment on the defense. Hope he can have a Danielle hunter type of NFL career and be a late bloomer, but he didn’t cut it for us. Looked the part yet couldn’t perform

He set his own bar way too high out the gate in that 2020 MSU game to open the season. Dude was unreal dominant that game, 11 total QB pressures that day...since then, we've never seen a performance anywhere close to that from him.
But he was never a bad player really either, he seemed to rarely have extreme games one way or the other, it was more of "oh whats Ali Gaye up to today" and he still somehow played like 50-60 snaps...didnt notice anything good or bad really with him most of time

He'll get a chance to help close down that pocket, again, on those Bama uniforms this November....
Looks like a high-motor player.
