I have a PSA AR-10 like this.

So it has the big front sight. I think the .308 deserves more than iron sights so I’d like to put a red dot or scope on it.

1) Is it hard to remove that big front sight for someone like me? Me being someone who likes to shoot guns, not build them. I don’t have a vise or…knowledge.

2) suggestions for optics? I don’t want to spend much money and won’t be shooting beyond 200yds. This is mostly for the range with the very occasional hog hunt. I’d like to keep it under $100.

You probably don’t have the knowledge or tools to remove the FSB and a red dot or scope/mount is going to cost you over your $100 budget.

Sell it and get something without that front site.

So removing it is a pain in the arse. I’ll just leave it then.

You'd be surprised what a scope will do... just for fun I put a 1-4x variable power scope on my C308 (a Cetme, with a big front sight post).
For reference, this pic looks a lot like my setup

I can see the front sight post at 1x, but due to elevation of the scope I still get a clear picture. By the time I'm at about 2.5x, the front sight is completely gone.

You're going to mount a scope on your AR 10 and discover the same thing- the front post disappears.

Start by getting your budget up to at least $500.

He could still put a red dot on and co-witness, correct? I realize it's not ideal.

500 minimum. An AR-10 is going to have recoil. That recoil will put pressure and affect the internals on an optic. I have seen so many Cheap optics come apart internally at the range. Do not skimp on your optic. I would suggest an EOtech to start. You can get one in the five hundred range...give or take.

Like others have said, your mount will cost more than this. And you will want a good mount. A cheap mount will not hold true on this type of gun thus throwing your optics off.
Your gun is only as good as your optics to an extent. Save some more coin if you need, and get something you will enjoy for years to come.

Prett good deal on a Trijicon Credo. They usually run around $750.

Those Trijicon lines have crazy good glass for their price range, and Trijicon has a well-deserved reputation for withstanding combat conditions.

The front site is incorporated with the gas block. Get a quad rail gas block (~$30) and replace the existing one for future additions (flip up irons, light, etc.) Buy a Nikko Sterling or Sig Romeo red dot (~$80). I have one of each, not the best optics, but they do the job and seem to hold up. Upgrade optics later when you can.
