List of most fit athletes, by sport

Which sports make the most fit athletes? Not the most athletic, but the most fit?
My list:

1.Decathlon
2.Water Polo
3.Triathlete
4.Boxing/MMA
5.Wrestling (Olympic style)
6.Rowing
7.Swimming
8.Track and Field - sprint to middle distance
9.Basketball - smaller players
10.Soccer
...almost: Gymnasts and Cross Country Skiing

I think soccer should be higher than basketball. Midfielders tend to run 6-8 miles a game and still have to perform and play well technically. They also don’t get subbed out until they are done and don’t really have scheduled timeouts.

I’ve also wrestled and done a half Ironman and a hard wrestling match is infinitely more tiring.

If fit means cardio/endurance I think cross country skiers are at the top.

Rowing on your list but not rugby?

And I also don’t think a boxer or wrestler or water polo player holds a candle to a soccer player or tennis player either

Never seen a chunky Mens tennis player. Put that ahead of half of those.

.... fair enough. I was going to let people use their own definition, which would make different lists, but here is a general definition:
Having high levels of endurance, strength, flexibility and a healthy body. I add the healthy body thing, because some sports (performed at a high level) break down the human body to unhealthy levels, like extreme marathon runners and extreme body builders.

I played basketball, football, 7s rugby, boxed and wrestled. 1. Wrestling 2. Boxing 3. 7s rugby........................................................4. football 5. basketball


Soccer is about like basketball and neither is really taxing. Never played soccer but I've watched it and there is plenty standing around. Yes, you have cardio from jogging and occasional sprinting but nothing like the first 3. Anyone who thinks Boxing/Wrestling/MMA aren't at the very top of the list has never done them. It's a completely different level. Unlike soccer, rugby operates in a line, so you are running the entire field back and forth and tackling/getting tackled which takes a lot out of you. Soccer has formations and zones that you stay in so when the ball is elsewhere on the field, you are just standing around.

I don't know how one could watch a prime Pete Weber and not think you were witnessing the epitome of raw power, athleticism and sex appeal.

Bowling should be high on this list.
