Basic exploratory questions about Montana

No timetable at all, probably just within like 18 months or so, my wife and I would like to venture up to check out Montana. We would like to stay in a cabin probably close to a town as opposed to being out in the middle of the country with nothing around. She's very much into touristy things so we'd want to shop and dine and really take in the "feel" of the place. We wouldn't really do much of the things many people go to Montana for like hunt or fish, it'd mainly be a trip to take in the views and the cool setting.
-Is there one city that's easiest to fly into?
-Knowing that we won't be hunting or fishing, is there one town that's standout better than the others? What are best recommendations to stay for first timers?
-When I think Montana I think cold weather, is it a must to go then? If we went in the summer when it was hot would it lose some luster or is summer perfectly fine?

My brother lives in Billings. I know you can fly one stop to there from Atlanta on multiple airlines.
It was -30 air temp in December; I'll say a big hell no to that, but that's just me.

Ive been several times and always flew into Billings. Billings and Bozeman are two completely different cities. Personally, I find Billings to be a bit depressing. Bozeman is more hip, probably due to Montana State U being there. It's also closer to Yellowstone.
Billings is also more desert plains and Bozeman a bit more lush. You can leave out of Billings and head towards Red Lodge (pretty cool town), drive the Beartooth highway (incredible) and go into another Yellowstone entrance. Its just a bit more remote.
I always went to Billings because I was headed towards the mountains for backpacking. If I were going with my wife, I would probably choose Bozeman.

I have flown into Bozeman. You can do Big Sky, then head towards Livingston and down towards Yellowstone through Paradise Valley. Sage Lodge, Chico Hot Springs, Old Saloon are all cool places.

We had cheap and easy flights into Kalispell last year. Stay somewhere outside Whitefish and have easy access to Glacier. Glacier is one of the most beautiful places I've seen in the world.
I'd go around July. Hard pass on that winter weather for me.

We really enjoyed Missoula. It's a "hip" college town in Western Montana. The White Rhino was a cool divey college bar with a decent whiskey selection (Elmer T Lee for $8 pours). The Camino was a good "upscale" Mexican spot downtown. We stayed at the Residence Inn, which is new and has shopping connected to it. There are coffee shops, breweries, and a distillery in town too. For part of the trip, we stayed on a lake in Georgetown that had some beautiful scenery and was close to hikes. Missoula is also only a couple hours south of Glacier/Whitefish if you want to spend any time there.

where did you fly into?

Missoula has an airport. Our flights got messed up because we were leaving Louisiana at the time of a hurricane, so my wife connected through Denver, and I connected through Seattle.

My wife and I stayed in Livingston Montana and it was absolutely amazing. A couple of great brewerys and amazing views. If you do that PLEASE check out Chico Hot Springs.

It seems like if you've never been to Montana, that's the most obvious place to go first. Going in the winter would definitely limit where you could go in that area, though.
And, yes, it's a very easy airport to fly in and out of. However, I don't know about directs to Atlanta.

All good info. Planning on going there this summer.

Montana is a very big state - 3rd largest in Continental US behind only Texas and CA. And the infrastructure is limited so it's not as easy to get around as other places. Depending on your time frame and what you like to do, you might consider moving around instead of staying in one place. Maybe even do an open jaw ticket.

People don't understand the Wyoming/ Montana weather very well.
Summer barely gets hot, and its dry. You can have snow almost year round. May is mud season and it can also snow, but the snow is generally melting.
Unless you want to ski, I wouldn't go during the winter.
The wildlife and scenery is absolutely fantastic and its a fantastic vacation for summertime for southerners to escape the summer humidity.

Saw a few snowflakes fall on July 4 on the Beartooth Hwy one summer.

we would not be skiing, when would you suggest we go? I take it we should avoid May due to mud but it sounds like June/July would be in the sweet spot?

A lot of it really depends on what you want to see and do, where you want to go. I don't know Montana that well, more Jackson Hole area and some Yellowstone.
Late summer and early fall are fantastic times of year to go.

We went in early October and the weather was chilly but not overly cold. It did snow a couple days, but I think the low temp while we were there was 29 degrees.
