Beyoncé in the top ten is ridiculous. She's not my cup of tea but I won't argue that she's a great entertainer and a star. But she isn't a great singer by any measure. Good, sure, great, not a chance.

A lot of legitimate greats on there, but:
Stevie I would not have that high, purely on singing ability, but I'm pussing out because he's a genius.
So, no Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Elvis Presley, Freddie Mercury, Brad Delp, Chris Cornell, Ann Wilson, etc.?
Interesting list began to lose credibility then I remembered that Rolling Stone has no credibility to begin with, really back to the 1990s or before.

I always find it funny when people get mad about something completely arbitrary like who is the best singer.

ZERO Rock Vocalists

I do not have an issue with that.
This was their stated methodology:
quote:That distinction alone should have ensured there were several rock voices on the list. I would say it would have disqualified Mariah Carey.
keep in mind that this is the Greatest Singers list, not the Greatest Voices List.

In all cases, what mattered most to us was originality, influence, the depth of an artist’s catalog, and the breadth of their musical legacy. A voice can be gorgeous like Mariah Carey’s, rugged like Toots Hibbert’s, understated like Willie Nelson’s, slippery and sumptuous like D’Angelo’s, or bracing like Bob Dylan’s. But in the end, the singers behind it are here for one reason: They can remake the world just by opening their mouths.
It's hard to put almost anyone ahead of Lennon (12) and or McCartney if that's the standard. The idea that Beyonce, Carey or Cooke would be ahead of them is ludicrous.
Let's just be honest about what this list is: woke for the sake of woke.

Since when does highlighting absurdity packaged as unbiased commentary constitute "get[ting] mad"?

Rolling Stone is a political magazine that pretends to cover rock and roll music. They do absolutely everything poorly, but nothing more so than their best lists.

So, no Frank Sinatra...?
Given Sinatra's "Privilege" (#19), he somehow eked his way into Rolling Stone's Top 20, edging out Minnie Ripperton
However he did NOT rank ahead of Celia Cruz (WHO??) at #18, warbling great, Bob Dylan (#15)
This list was obviously slapped together by Rolling Stone's drunken Dept of Woke Equality-Diversity-Inclusion warriors.

Is it?
Hadn't noticed.
I'm sure it's just a coincidence

no Roy Orbison?
Not until #71.
Orbison's legendary pipes was ranked waaaay behind Kurt Cobain....and left in the dust by Rock Legends, Miriam Makeba, Youssou N’Dour, and Umm Kulthum.

Sounds like a racist assessment. But we'll allow it.

Since Matt Tiabbi left (he IS 100% gone, right?) its all beyond unhinged politically.
RS has seemed to revel in the absurdity of their "Best" lists, don't they? This one is obviously....nothing but race-baiting political dreck to the nth degree.
I can easily see RS's batsh*t panel needing oxygen as a result of laughing hysterically during the process.

At least since the 70's when they said Led Zeppelin sucked

I mean, even Beatles haters almost have to just objectively agree on their titanic statue in those 4 areas.
In what world did Mariah Carey have more "originality" than the Beatles? And please, tell me more about the "breadth" of Carey's catalogue. Lennon and McCartney basically span genres (folk, pop, rock, metal, modern art, country, blues, etc.)
