Daughter and boyfriend, both 17, never skied. What would be a good place to go Mardi Gras week?
Looking at perhaps Crested Butte in Colorado.
Heard Breckinridge may be packed that wee.

Tahoe might not be a bad idea, that area has had a ton of snow this year and places that are solid for beginners as well like Northstar or Palisades, there are some smaller resorts also worth checking out.

You can go to PC for no more than any other Epic resort. In fact probably cheaper due to the huge variety of lodging options. People always say PC is so expensive but I’ve been twice and to various Colorado resorts and it’s very comparable

Appreciate the insight. I’ve actually been to the Canyons in Park City many years ago. Great area.

Breck and everywhere in CO will be packed as it’s Presidents Day. CB is fantastic and has a possibility of being slightly less packed.

CB, Monarch, Cooper (might not be a bad option for a group of newbies), Powderhorn.
Basically, Id shoot for the less big name options bc its gonna be packed at most resorts.

Park City is terrible. No snow, crowded, bad food, mean lift operators. Everyone should stay away that week.
Go anywhere but PC.

Loved Winter Park and Keystone when I lived in Colorado.

And I think largely wasted on first time skiers. The reason to go to places like vail are largely wasted in a first time skier.
For a true learn to ski trip that also won’t blow the budget I always recommend people look at ski Cooper. It’s small, but incredibly beautiful, minimal lines and a great place for beginners to just go up and down all day and learn. If after a few days the kids have some basic ability and want some new terrain do a day pass at any of the I-70 resorts.

Ned has the best advice unless you just want to spend the extra money to say you went to a big name resort. Learn for half the cost at Ski Cooper

And just stay in Leadville for somewhat reasonable prices (relative to the area).

Crested Butte is great and low key for first timers. Highly recommend. Could also do NM for even more lower key but not as good skiing (for the more experienced- Taos excluded).

Just want to second Ski Cooper. I live up here and have multiple passes, but this is a perfect mountain to learn on and has terrain for all skill levels. Beginner and intermediate runs are wide and crowds are minimal even busy isn't crowded.
The trade off is in non-skiing activities. Leadville is fine, but not Breck as a "ski town"
Eta: also where 10th Mountain Division trained for WW2, so ski on history.

The Backpacker in BR does charter trips to both Steamboat and Snowmass from Baton Rouge over Mardi Gras. They book everything for you and honestly it's about the same as it would be if you booked yourself. You get a charter direct flight from BR to your destination and they have ground transportation to get you to your condo/hotel. Be warned, Mardi Gras this year falls on President's Day weekend so prices are even higher than normal.

If price isn’t an issue, for a packed weekend, Deer Valley in PC would be great. Amazing Ski School and controlled crowds, as long as you all are ski only.
Again, probably the most expensive choice, but it would be a high quality experience.

Throw me down for Park City as well. Just so much to do outside of just skiing that makes first ski trips so much fun. At this point, without Epic Pass availability you will pay a premium for daily lift tickets but being a first trip I wouldnt suggest skiing everyday anyway. Do some shopping, hit main street, go tubing at woodward, etc.
If the weather is nice even head up to Brighton for a day for cheaper ski prices.
If they hate it (or if one person has had enough) there is plenty yo do on and around the mountain that everyone else can still ski and those not skiing can still have an awesome time.
