The Dims used to be able to find pretty good actors like Bill Clinton and Obama, who at least would come off somewhat genuine and likeable.

To a certain extent, yes they were. That doesn't make them good or mean I liked them. But if you can't see the charm that alot of middle of the road uninformed voters saw in Slick Willy playing the Sax on the Arsenio Hall show, then you aren't paying attention.
Hitler was also charismatic. So was Lenin, so was Mao, and so was Kim Sung IL. That doesn't make any of these guys good.

It would be harder to name more than 1 or 2 Democrats that aren’t puppets. Manchin might be the only one on that side of the aisle that hasn’t voted 100% in lockstep since day 1. Couple times the Squad got out of control with some crazy idea. That’s it. They are all NPC.

Taking politics out of it, Obama was a great public speaker. His ability to pause at the right moments in his speeches was what made him so good to draw people in regardless of the message.
With the exception of Reagan, Republicans have never been good at picking a nominee that was good at public speaking.
