It’s probably more likely to die while waiting for your 2 week notice to expire than to get a career ending injury in a bowl game. Literally never happens
See Jaylon Smith, Jake Butt.
It’s not really about career ending injuries or just top draft picks. If you are a mid to late rd projected pick, you can really boost your draft stock if you crush the combine compared to just playing and getting two tackles in the Loaded Potato Bowl. So if you get a non career ending injury but won’t be 100% in the combine, you’re screwed. One game won’t make a difference, but a huge combine does.

Good opportunity to see what we have and if we need to hit the portal for more DL.

They get scholarships and nil, they should play or pay back.

I think as fans we have to change how we view these non-playoff games. Instead of season ending duds, look at it as a jamboree of sorts for next year.
Hell if I was a coach I'd thank every senior and junior that declares for draft for a job well done on the season, but they're only traveling to bowl game as a reward. No practice reps and no play. All of it goes to the returning underclassmen.

Get real. Pay back 3-4 years of schooling and NIL money just for sitting out the cheezit bowl? Their job is done so let them move on.
Forcing guys to play when their heart is not in it is never going to work.

Only further proving my point that pointless bowl games are stupid, if the best players don’t care about playing in them why should they be played. I get it sponsors get to have a huge tax write off and the third string will get game reps but they can scrimmage each other and get the same work in

NCAA needs to make a rule that forces them to forfeit their scholarship the next year and if it’s their last year, pay back the previous year. If it’s all about money for these kids, then make it about money.

If someone offered you a promotion worth millions annually, told you you didn’t have to finish out your 2 week notice, and if you do there’s a 10% chance you go brain dead then you don’t get that promotion anymore…would you do it?
Bruh it’s football not WW2

the game is played for the fans. if nobody payed to go to the games. we wouldn't have college sports.or any pro sports either.

Something needs to be done to disincentivize this
It was obvious that the Bowls would turn into the NIT once the CFP was started and once it expands it will only get worse. Once it is expanded to 12 teams, opt outs will start happening well before the bowl season...just wait.

I think this problem will begin to disappear as the program distances itself from the former regime. It seems to me that NIL money could also be used as incentives to play. Plug Perkins in at Jack, Jones at defensive end (Gaye is no loss), and Wingo who had a better year than Roy at tackle. Tygee Hill and West will have to provide depth. The best defense in this game will be keeping the ball away from Purdue.

I'm afraid you are right about this.

How many career ending injuries occurred in a bowl game?
Posted on 12/22/22 at 6:50 am to iBack8569
the biggest beneficiary of the playoffs-expanded or otherwise-is espn.
we’re turning the college game into the nfl, and that’s a very bad thing.

The bowl games are played for the SEC and LSU to make $$$ from TV …

Wasn't every bowl meaningless other than the BCS national championship? I don't know why it's only recently that all bowl games other than the CFP seem all of a sudden uninspiring.
I just had so much passion for LSU football when I was younger that if I was ever a player I'd want to represent the SEC, LSU, and beat the hell out of Purdue. I guess players don't play like that, have that pride, or think like that anymore. When Penn St. beat us in the Citrus Bowl in 2010, that mattered to me. It was a damper on the season. Similarly, beating Notre Dame in 2017 in the same bowl would have had us at a very solid 10-3 (6-2 SEC) the same year we lost to Troy, but of course, count on Ed to frick up something as simple as a 1-Yd play with Guice, again...

And what exactly do you propose???
You certainly cannot force a kid that has a future in the NFL to play in a meaningless “exhibition game” outside of the CFP. These days, kids can transfer from one school to the next simply because a coach yelled at them in practice or they think they should be a starter. Kids are making NIL money, and it’s pretty much a free-for-all. There is no turning back now. What you see is what you’ve got.

Id be pissed if several players were opting out of the final four playoffs. Dont really care too much in this current scenario.

quote:Really? Why not? LSU didn't opt out of providing a free education and a world stage to display their talents. Why is the university the only one expected to keep its end of the deal? Coddle much?
It sucks, but you can't force them to play.

Shorter term NIL deals. Gordon already does this to a certain extent.
If i was paying someone to represent my company I wouldnt want the possible backlash of him opting out.
Structure the deal through the end of regular season then re-up with the players prepping for the bowl.
