The black plastic Tomcat rat traps are a lot easier to set than the old school Victor traps and just as effective. About once a summer we have rats stop by to start a nest around the porch somewhere and out come the traps. Ill catch one or two for several straight nights and then they're all gone til next year. Ive tried slim Jims but peanut butter has always been the most reliable in my experience. Cheerios also have worked pretty well.

Can be purchased reasonably priced on Amazon.

The sticky boards are good for small mice (especially juvenile ones). Place them against base boards, mice have poor eyesight, and frequently run along the walls. The old style spring loaded mouse traps are more effective for adult mice. Peanut butter is great for bait, since they have to lick it off, and it usually gets them right on the neck. If they don't like peanut butter, I have had luck with a small piece of raw bacon for bait (tie it on the trip lever with fishing monofilament).

I used to live in an apartment and saw one run out on my counter a few times.
Set out sticky traps and it got stuck on a few of them but always managed to jam them against the stove and break free while I was gone.
I then put out snap traps with Nutella. The mouse would lick it off without triggering the trap.
I then pulled out my stove, figured out it was living in the crawl space, coming through a hole, and not in my actual apartment so I wasn't worried about it dying inside. Set out poison, the mouse ate all of it and that was the end of the mouse.
Balled up tinfoil and stuffed it in the hole, never had another problem.
Smart mouse though.

Order a cage trap off Amazon and put peanut butter on the trap tab.
I’ve caught about 50 rats and mice over past couple years with it. Very effective.

Have a heart trap or snap-trap baited specifically with a Hershey Kiss. Never fails.

If she won’t have a cat, convince her to her to borrow your buddies cat for 2 weeks. Just the smell of the cat will make them move on to your neighbors house. Rinse/repeat once a year

Plug in mouse repellent. Little white boxes that you plug in to an outlet that omits a noise that only they can hear. Apparently it drives them nuts. We had a problem with field nice when we lived out in the country. Put one each in every room in the house and never had a problem again.

My experience is mixed with traps
I’ve had success with glue, hidden and snap traps
Bait - peanut butter is good
Placement is key- along walls and or corners.
Also- there’s never just one mouse or rat. Usually if you see one, there’s a lot
Trap them outside, Block their entry points and any spots inside that have holes. They can fit through real small holes.
Cats are good idea too

I am a proponent of live traps.
No gross mess of dealing with a dead mouse.
Bobus tip: you can always relocate the trapped mouse to an enemy's house.
