I know these guys aren’t starters. But how do teams have depth if the 2’s and 3’s continue to constantly leave every year. I know you can grab new players in portal. But that’s new guys learning a new scheme every year. Instead of having possibly a year three guy starting, you will always have new players. Won’t this hurt the product teams are putting on field? Especially in the beginning of the season
Where have you been this season? Did you not see what Kelly did with this failure of a roster. Built from little to win the West! It will only get better.

Yeah I saw how we faded at the end of the season because of lack of depth. This is exactly the point I’m trying to make. Great season for where we were last year I admit. I’m not just talking about LSU. I was talking about teams in general will not have the depth and 3rd year guys that are bought in a lead by example. Coaches will be teaching alignment as you will to all new players every year.

quote:what a dumbass train of thought. For example I saw the shite people were saying about Xavier Hill leaving which sparked this thread anyway. Kid is going into his 4th year next year a has 2 starts. Everybody in front of him is back next year, and both guys at his position are true freshman. You're telling a guy to sit 4 years and possibly play his 5th year? Dude sees the guys in front and the talent behind.
It’s the new generation of “if I can’t play I quit ! No such thing as team concept ! Or maybe they just weren’t good enough
You'd rather this kid sit on the bench for 4+ years just so LSU can have "depth" than want him to succeed somewhere. People like you only think of these kids as chess pieces and numbers.
Back then you'd lose a year of eligibility. You think you wouldn't have had players leaving 20+ years ago if they had the chance to like these kids do? If they were able to make the same type of money? You're full of yourself.

Portal gains are also affecting depth, and it will be net positive.

Losing OL depth is a MAJOR ISSUE, and one that won’t be solved easily by ‘the portal’. This was our weakest unit, along with DB’s, going into this season.

The portal/transfer numbers are startling when you consider that around 46% last year failed to find a D1 landing spot. I had hoped that NIL would help with retention and perhaps it will eventually if institutions can find further financial support for those depth-quality student athletes. Until then ,and until there’s a method to keep opportunists out of the ear of the players and their families, teams are going to have to endure the constant churn.

Bama, and now UGA, will not be able to stack 15-20 NFL-quality O Linemen anymore. They will keep their starters, and get their high recruits. But the guys who didn't make first team right away, a lot will transfer to other schools with openings.
Once this settles out, most teams will have a decent 2-deep; your starter, and the guy expected to take over when your starter leaves. Anyone in-between will look elsewhere.

I find it comical that for the most part backups leave one program to become backups at another program. We were an exception last year where we had a depleted roster so transfers could come in and start. That’s not the norm

This is college football. You have to teach your playbook to new players every year. If a player spends all spring and summer in your playbook and he still can't learn it, there's probably something wrong with your scheme.

Anyone that isnt starting immediately is usually off to somewhere else
There are 255 teams in division 1 when you include FBS and FCS. When you count up the 85 scholarships for FBS and 63 for FCS, that's a potential total of nearly 19,000 players. Fewer than a third of those players could be considered starters, even including kickers, punters, and deep snappers. There might be 1,400 players in the portal today.
So you're looking at roughly 10% of your depth players in the portal. The world's not falling apart yet.

And these are guys who still
Couldn’t contribute
Wire has been here 5 years and we played Bradford at Tackle then Campbell or Emory missed time.
The CBS leaving couldn’t see the field when we literally had no one to play. Some
Of these guys aren’t even depth players.

It's all relative to how other competing schools perform in the portal, both in and out.
Based on last year and the very early stages of this year, LSU seems to outperform

Even with the departures at OL and assuming we sign all of the currently committed OL prospects, we will be carrying 15 scholarship OLmen into next season barring additional transfers in and out of the program.
15/85 is approximately 20% of our roster.
Will the depth be experienced? That is a different question.

With all due respect. Barely any of those teams are loaded down with 4 star recruits that even have the option to transfer somewhere else. Lsu is in that catagory.

It will settle down as these guys going into the portal last year and this year can only do it once. Once you have younger portal players you sign, they can't leave again and maintain eligibility without sitting out or stepping down to lower tier school.
Everybody wants to get immediate playing time and gets their feelings hurt if they aren't starting by sophomore year. The Manny Netherly's of the world will never make it out of the portal.

This is what Kelly is trying to do, when left with 39 scholarship players, he had to use the Portal. We had 3 returning starters on offense and 4 on defense. I can’t think of a team that had to bring in more players than LSU and make it work. Kelly would like to have 4th and 5th years starters, but it will take time to get there. He played the hand dealt him, an did better than anyone could have.
Kelly has met with most players and family, giving them options.

Wire was here in 2018 and he barely played this year.

It’s going to affect most teams, it’s how you recruit and back fill roster with portal guys that can contribute immediately. As time passes, it will be imperative to keep or hire great coaches that are great communicators also, so they can have the players quickly pick up the scheme and system.
