Bill James: Derek Jeter is the worst fielder in baseball

A group that tracks every ball hit in the majors says Derek Jeter is the worst fielder in baseball.
Stats guru Bill James, author of the "Baseball Abstract," and a panel of nine other voters, ranked Jeter 22nd among all major-league shortstops, with one calling Jeter "the least effective defensive player in the major leagues, at any position."
Jeter received one 10th-place vote in balloting for the 2008 Fielding Bible Awards, announced yesterday. One panel member comes from Baseball Info Solutions (BIS), a group that ... well, just say they do their research.
"They watched film of every major-league game, and had recorded every ball off the bat by the direction in which it was hit [the vector], the type of hit [groundball, flyball, line-drive, popup, etc.] and by how hard the ball was hit [softly hit, medium, hard hit]," according to James.
In an earlier article that appears on James' Fielding Bible Web site, BIS ripped Jeter.
"They had analyzed the outcomes to determine who was best at turning hit balls into outs," James wrote. "One of their conclusions was that Jeter was probably the least effective defensive player in the major leagues, at any position."

Jeter is the best in MLB at making an easy play look difficult.

The fact that the Yankees moved A-Rod, who was one of the best defensive shortstops in baseball, out of position to leave one of the worst fielding shortstops there sort of calls into question how great a team player Jeter really is

People have been saying that so much, and harping on his shitty defense so long, that it seems like they're forgetting that he's got a good chance at 3,500 hits, 2,000 runs, 300 HR, 1,500 RBI or so, 400 SB. And a career BA of .316 is nothing shabby.
If he plays until he's 40 or so, he might even get to 4,000 hits... although I doubt he gets there.

No

Yeah, he's have to play a few more years than that.

Jeter has moved into that rarified air of “so overrated that he’s now underrated”. People have spent so much time and effort correcting morons on Jeter’s supposed skills that it’s been lost he actually is a great player who most certainly deserves to go to the Hall of Fame. It’s almost impossible for a Hall of Famer to be overrated, yet Jeter has managed it. I think the last guy in sports to be so overrated he actually was underrated was Scottie Pippen.

I was just about to post this. Jeter was so overrated, that it pissed people off and now everybody thinks he sucks. It's easy to forget he's a no-doubt 1st ballot HOFer.

I have used that exact phrase to describe Jeter numerous times. Usually in a conversation where I pointed out that Jeter is the worst defensive SS in baseball.

I'm not following how he is the worst if he is the 22nd best shortstop?

the 2 most overrated plays in baseball history" the jeter flip to get jeremy giambi and the jeter "dive" into the stands.
on the dive he had plenty of time to stop or slide, and he caught the ball easily before he got to the stands

Probably only 22 that played enough games/innings to qualify.
