Like you said, if we had a 12 team playoff this season Georgia would have almost zero incentive for playing in this game and it would be entirely reasonable for them to sit key players in prep for the playoffs...just like many NFL teams do in the final week of the season if they have already clinched a playoff spot. Is that what we really want to see in these games? The backups for a team who has already clinched a playoff berth playing (in some cases) the backups of another team that has likewise clinched a spot?
This is exactly what the conf champ games could turn into. In some cases both teams could potentially have a spot sewed up in a 12 team playoff and you would see both teams resting the starters....you think people are going to travel hundreds of miles and spend thousands of dollars to see that? You think the same amount of people will watch it on TV....I doubt it.

You don’t need divisions to have an SECCG. Top 2 teams go.
You mean Alabama and whoever the polls pick for them to play... we all better hope they dont get rid of divisions.

Divisions are actually not what people are looking for now. Saw a post yesterday that the Big 10 championship should be tOSU/Michigan this year if there were no divisions.

If I remember right the P5 Conf champion was to get a seeded bye...

Yap, divisions in college are pointless at the very core.

The 2 teams with the best conference record will play for the championship. It’ll be around robin thing like the Big12 does.

round rob·in
/'?roun(d) '?räb?n/
noun
1. a tournament in which each competitor plays in turn against every other.
An example of a round robin is the group phase currently going on in the World Cup.

This topic rubs some people the wrong way. I tend to agree with the original poster.
With a 12 team playoff, the top 4 conf champ automatically goes, the remaining 8 teams are decided by rankings.
How the champ is decided is up to the conference, and the conference has incentive to get as many teams in as possible.
What happens when the loser of the CCG gets knocked out of the playoff because their ranking falls because of a loss? When this happens, the comish has to consider if the CCG hurts the conference.
The CCG's were a huge part of the SEC's dominance in that they were the first to introduce and it gave a team another signature, late season win, and it resulted in more SEC teams getting bumped in rakings late in the season. All other conferences followed suit (big XII was late comers after OU kept getting left out).
In the playoff scenario, there's potential value for deciding a conf champ after regular season and keeping the rankings as they are at that moment in time.
That said, making a definitive declaration one way or another is stupid because no one knows how this all shakes out, but it certainly is worth pondering the what ifs.

FAIL. Here’s why:

The SEC Championship game will go away when it stops making millions of dollars. Spoiler alert: None of us will live long enough to see a day when this happens.

You people do realize that by "staying home" for a scheduled conference championship game, that would be both a forfeit and a loss, not to mention a major problem with the tv contract.
When has a basketball program ever just not participated in their conference tournament because their place in the big dance was already locked in?
You guys are overthinking this.

I think they will have to adjust the regular season slightly
Players don't want to have to play in additional games, risk injury, when the NFL is still the league where they can make generational wealth
Maybe eliminate some non conf games that way you can still keep the calendar relatively the same
The NFL is not changing their combine dates and the Senior Bowl is not moving and players still have to get ready for those events for the draft

You’re an idiot. Conference championships aren’t going to go away because of the 12-team playoff.
Nah, OP is probably right.
Conference championships are going to go the way of the bowls.
You're adding extra rounds in the playoffs, so that's more games already. You're also forcing your two best teams to play, meaning 1 will take a loss and maybe drop out of contention. All for what, a conference champ... people don't care that LSU won the SEC in 2011, or Bama did in 2021. You're not playing for the right to go to the Sugar Bowl anymore, you're trying to make the playoffs now.
