I do not have enough interest to do the research, but if you’re really interested, go back and look at some additional early Bibles predating the King James. You would probably need to read Greek.

The King James translators were notoriously bad at their job. My first guess is that they added fasting or mistranslated something from Koine Greek.

Most modern Bible translations ignore the King James translation because it IS so VERY bad a translation, and go all the way back to translate directly from Koine.

The issue is further complicated by the fact that different Koine manuscripts may either include or exclude the word “fasting.” It is entirely possible that they are working from different early manuscripts.

you will want to go back and check whether the translators of that edition worked in part from the King James. Most post-KJV did so, until recently.

If I'm doing a study I hit the ESV, NIV and KJV (and maybe others, but 2 minimum) for passages like this. There's almost always a footnote where there's a difference, something like "this word wasn't in the most reliable manuscripts" or something similar. Nobody's trying to hide anything.

The KJV is my least favorite and typically the one that requires on-the-fly translation in your head, because we don't talk that way and we think the way we talk.

He is 100% correct

KJV is only of note for being the 1st english translation. Which was a HUGE deal, and a clear defenestration of the Catholic church in England.

But it was a generally bad translation, compared to more recent translations.

When it comes to issues like this I like to turn to the Catechism of the Catholic Church to understand their interpretation. Take it or leave it, the Catholic Church put's a lot of thought to issues like this. In the Catechism I could not find any specific reference to Mark 9:29 but did find this general conclusion involving prayer and fasting:

I honestly thought that most people who still rely exclusively upon the KJV were simply doing so out of habit. Your post made me do some research.

I had no idea that there was actually a movement insisting that this crap translation is inherently superior to all others. Just wow.
