Just looked to see what it would take to go business to Italy in the Spring with United (3 people). 930k!!!!!!! Points. Been a while since I've booked with points, but there was a time when that would have been 300k points no problem.

Yeah I just looked the other day and my mind was beyond fricked

I've gone to Europe in business for less than 200k a person.

I just looked and it was going to be almost a million for two for some locations

I really did not know that airlines miles would be affected by inflation

US airlines redemptions overseas have always been terrible compared to foreign carriers.

I transferred Amex points to Iberia for my trip in Spain at 1:1.4. Got two business class tickets from Miami for 30k Amex points each way. 120k round trip for two to Spain for 120k MR points.

The points game works fine if you have points in multiple buckets and flexibility on your travel dates.

When you have to go to a specific place on a specific day, points can deliver a poor value.

You all aren't looking in the right spots then.

In the last couple of days I've booked Air France Business JFK-CDG-BRU for 55k Flying Blue miles the week before July 4th

British Airways Business FCO-LHR-IAH for 57.5k AAdvantage Miles

KLM Business ZRH-AMS-AUS for September 2023 for 80k Flying Blue miles.

Distance based award charts are your friend

Agreed. We just booked Tokyo for 70k each. Non stop economy.

I just have to wait for inflation to hit wallets hard enough to slow travel. Have lots of delta skymiles to use.

Unfortunately Delta moved SkyPesos over to a dynamic award structure, so you basically get one cent per mile in value.

As much as they suck AA still has the best partner award redemption rates followed by Alaska, United and then Delta

Amex MR to ANA gets you business class to Tokyo from 75k to 90k RT.

Transfers Virgin Atlantic get First Class on ANA at high end of that range. You just lose the 20 day advantage ANA gives you (can book 350 days out vs 330).

Using ANA points to book first class on ANA cost more than VA booking first class on ANA, just a quirk.

Went ANA F round trip Tokyo x3. Latest was to try the new First Class “The Suite”. Still the best service I’ve had compared to any other first Class.

VS redemption has been nearly impossible due to pent up demand. Have to go ANA direct to have a decent chance.

This is a great tip. Unfortunately, my 2023 is full of TATL trips but hoping for TPAC in 2024

Yup. They're probably just ahead of the game. Eventually they'll all probably go to dynamic.

The extra gut punch is many of them are adding on fuel surcharges ON TOP of the point increases too.

I used to be able to book RT to almost anywhere for 60K on United. Not seeing much of that at all lately.

True. I'm always looking for business class redemptions which are obviously more.

Same with hotel points. Choice Hotels used to be (2001) 8,000-10,000 for a free night, 20,000 to 30,000 now same hotels for reference.

Until there's a recession. Then, you'll see programs start to be more generous to get people in the seats.
